of West Memphis, AR
September 24, 1950 - August 6, 2025
Sandra ''Sandy'' Powell Cook, age 74, of West Memphis, Arkansas passed away on Wednesday, August 6, 2025 at Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee on September 24, 1950 to T.P. and Vera Powell who preceded her in death.
Sandy was a dedicated longtime member of First United Methodist Church in West Memphis. She served in many organizations and on many committees over the years. She truly loved her church and church family. Her service to her church was through her strong belief and life commitment to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Sandy was a dedicated and very compassionate school teacher. Her career started in the Hughes, Arkansas school district and ended with retirement from the Marion, Arkansas school district where she was honored as Teacher of the Year in 2005. It seemed like every time she traveled, regardless of distance or destination, she would run into a former student. She touched many lives while being a schoolroom teacher.
Those left to remember and cherish Sandy are her beloved and devoted husband of 51 years, David, who cared for her to the end; brother, Ron Powell (Diane) of West Point, MS; Debra Shults (Jody) of Louisville, NE; sister in law, Gina Cook Knox (Russell) of Germantown, TN who spent numerous hours helping to care for her through the years and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that were all special to her and brought he much joy in her life.
In lieu of flowers, Sandy's wish would be for memorial contributions to be made to First United Methodist Church, West Memphis, AR or a charity of the donor's choice.
Sandy was such a special person with a heart of gold. As a teacher, she touched so many lives in Crittenden County and made a great impact on many students. As a friend, we shared so many fun times, hours of laughter, and even sad times together. I knew upon first meeting her when she became my "big sister" in our high school sorority that we would become lifelong friends. Even when we didn't see each other for a long time, it was if we had not missed a beat when we were together again. Sandy may no longer be with us, but her wonderful soul will always be in our memory and heaven has definitely gained a beautiful angel. I send my love and condolences to David and all of Sandy's family and friends.
Sandy, my beautiful sister.. couldn't have asked the Lord to give me a more caring loving sister. You were always there for me. You guided me in the way of good when I would let you!! Being hard headed as I am. You loved me through my teenage years!! And I know that was a challenge... so grateful and thankful you were my sister. Thank you for everything you did for me. I will see you again one day but until then I will miss you dearly and will always hang on to the memories you have given...I know you are not in pain anymore and you are in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ..
I carpooled with Sandy and two others the two years I taught in Hughes. I loved listening to her talk about history and wished I would have been one of her students. She was a special lady. Sending prayers to David and the family.
Heaven has another angel. Sandy was a wonderful person. Prayers for her family and friends
I am sorry to hear about the passing of Ms. Sandy. Y'all were amazing as neighbors while we were growing up on Cornell. The fantastic summer block parties and the trip to Florida would not have been the same without y'all. Ms. Sandy's smile and laugh always lit up a room and she was always a joy to be around. Sorry for your loss.
Mrs. Cook, Sandy was one of a kind. Our children were both fortunate to have her at Marion. They both loved her class, and her. I so enjoyed seeing her at school, out and about, and loved it when she would come into the Animal Hospital, and we could catch up, she always asked about the kids. I don't think I ever saw her that she didn't have a smile on her face no matter what might be going on. I am so so sorry for your loss David, we are keeping you and your family in our prayers.
David, We are so sorry to hear of Sandy`s passing. We will keep you in our prayers.
I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Mrs. Cook! She was a terrific teacher! Teaching truly was her calling! Please know her family are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. May you rest in peace! God bless you all!
I will be praying for all who loved Mrs. Cook, especially her family and closest friends.
She was a wonderful educator and I remember her fondly.
I had her in 8th and 9th grade. She came by my work unexpectedly my senior year to bring me a graduation gift. I was so touched she would even remember or find me. Part of her legacy is how much she cared for her students.
She was a great lady and teacher. My favorite teacher. She could teach like no other. She will be missed.
Wonderful teacher and even better person when I would run into her from time to time years after I graduated from Hughes. She always had a hug and I just loved running into her and Ms Mona Taylor out and about and reminiscing. Prayers are being sent out to the family. I hope you find comfort in knowing of the many lives she touched.
My condolences to the family and friends of Sandy Cook. She was an awesome teacher and to top that, she was even a better person. Mrs. Cook will always be remembered by Hughes High (Class of 85) and missed by all.
So sorry to learn of Sandy's passing. There is certainly comfort in knowing that she is whole once more! By all accounts she was a great teacher who helped to shape the future for many students!
Mrs. Cook was definitely a wonderful teacher and person . She was always one of my favorite teachers . I loved being in her history , economics and government classes . I would see her every once in a while long after i graduated in 1987 and she always remembered you and gave you a hug. My condolences to all of her family and loved ones . She will be missed .
What a blessing it was to have her as a teacher. I despised history, however, her class came alive with her smile, her personality, and her drive to teach us as much as we would allow her to.
Praying for Mrs. Cook's family, that God will wrap His arms around each of you and give you the peace, the comfort and allow you to feel Him in your presence, that only He can do.

I am saddened from reading of the loss of Sandy. Our friendship goes way back to our childhood when she would visit her cousin Rhonda in Hughes, and we all played together. Then the fall after I retired, she and I flew to visit Rhonda, and we three went to Washington, D.C. I will never forget when we entered the National Archives Museum, and I saw the tears in her eyes as she viewed the Charters of Freedom. She said with such excitement, ''I can't believe it! Here they are"these documents that I have taught about all these years!'' This is what a truly great teacher she was.
Mrs. Cook was not only one of my favorite teachers, but also one of the best teachers in the Mid-South. She recruited me to be on one of her famed History teams in 1990 when we placed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in a competition. I hadn't bumped into her in years, but it was always hugs and compliments when we reunited. On behalf of The Latham Brothers, we offer our condolences to the family and may Almighty God welcome her in with open arms.
Sending prayers and my condolences. She was definitely one of my favorite teachers. She always greeted you with a smile. Thank you for being an amazing teacher. God received another true angel. R.I.P '"
David,
Sandy fought a long and hard battle. She had strong will power.
A dear friend who gave many memories.
Very carrying teacher to all her students including one of mine.
As Carter would say we love you ''Bambi'' and will miss you
Sending prayers and strength to her family
It was my privilege to teach with Sandy for the four years I was at Hughes High School. I will always remember how kind"and wise"she was. She made a tremendous impact in the lives of so many of her students and fellow teachers.
Many condolences and wishes of comfort to the family and friends of Mrs. Cook. She was one special person, and indeed, hands down, was my favorite teacher at Hughes High School. She taught American History and American Government (11th and 12th grades). She was passionate about her chosen occupation as an educator, and made the classes she taught interesting and enjoyable. I admired her kindness, fairness, spunkiness, and respectfulness in the classroom and beyond. Mrs. Cook expressed genuine concern for her students and was an inspirational teacher because of all of the afore mentioned qualities. After I graduated high school in 1982, and up into the early/mid 1990s I would call her to see if it was convenient for me stop by and say hello and have a quick visit. It was always so good to see her because she was always glad to see former students. I know she will be missed by many people because she touched their lives in a lovely manner. May you find rest and peace as your sprit flies free in the great beyond. RIP&L sweet and adorable Sandy. 🕊♥️
DAVID, IM SO SORRY TO HEAR OF YOUR LOSS! YOU AND ALL THE FAMILY WILL BE OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS

David, Glenda and I were saddened by the news of Sandy's passing. We talked and laughed about some of the many wonderful times we had living next to you on Cornell. John, Ash, and Jim send their condolences. We will always remember Miss Sandy's salad we all enjoyed. What a beautiful person Sandy was and will always be in our memories. Roger and Glenda
I feel blessed to have been a pupil of Mrs. Cook during her first few years as a teacher.
She taught me so much and I carry so much of what I learned from her close.
I feel truly blessed to have been in her orbit, if only for a short time.
Can't wait to catch up on streets of gold! 🙏🏼
I knew Sandy while she taught in Marion. I was the person at the front desk at MSD administration office. When she would come in, I knew she was a gifted person and she certainly portrayed those gifts of a great smile, kindness and about taking care of her business. When her health became such she had to retire, my heart was broken for her. I'm praying for her family to be accepting of her loss knowing she is at last at rest. As one who knows the loss of many loved ones, I want to share that when one has suffered it is not wrong or bad to feel relief when the person leaves their earthly home. It is a blessing to know we are the ones left, but the one who passed is no longer suffering. She left me with happy memories of knowing her just a bit.
You touched many of our lives at Ole Hughes High School. You will be remembered by many.
Our condolences to your family.
I enjoyed every minute I had with Sandy. We taught together at Hughes High School and we carpooled together for many years.
I'll never forget Sandy's smile, her love of reading and, most especially, her excitement over going to the NASCAR races at the Indy 500. She truly enjoyed life and her teaching and church. She left those blessed to know her with a lot of wonderful memories.
I was a teacher & friend for the years I lived in Marion. We commuted together daily for 3 years to Hughes with two other friends. Our daily drive was always fun. We laughed, we shared teaching stories, we in Fridays often stopped & got snacks at the country store on our route. After leaving teaching I worshipped with her at FUNC Wedt Memphis where I directed choirs. Our husbands hunted & fished together often & we had many cookouts on Cornell! The Cornell Gang hung together through thick & thin. Sandy & David were always there when you needed them! I have treasured this friendship always! Too hear her say….''David Cook….'' was always a lead in to a funny ! Her fiesty personality served her well! Few students Ever Crossed Mrs. Cook. Her classroom management was amazing! She was an excellent history teacher, because she loved history & lived kids! There's a special place in Heaven for those like Sandy!

I am so sorry for your loss. Sandy was an amazing teacher and wonderful person.
Sandy and I along with two other women commuted back and forth to ASU in the mid 1970s.
She was fun to be around and the world is a worse place for her passing.
David and family,
So sorry for your loss, lifting you up in prayer.
My prayers are with the family at this time of sorrow. Sandy touched many young lives during her teaching days. My sons were some of those lives. She made history come alive.
I was a teacher during the time Sandy was teaching at Hughes. She was always willing to go the extra mile.
She is at rest now. The family, students, and friends will have many wonderful memories to keep in their heart. ❤️

Mrs Cook was a great teacher. She wanted her students to learn and made sure they could understand what she was teaching. I was a student of Hughes High School class of 1989. Prayers for her family and friends.
Mrs. Cook was one of my favorite teachers at Hughes High School. She helped me develop a life long love of history and government. Sending prayers for peace and comfort to her loved one.
David, I enjoyed my time teaching with Sandy in Hughes. We ate lunch together about every day for 5 years. I remember hearing her speak of David Cook long before I got to meet you. She was an inspiration to this beginning teacher and she possessed so many of the qualities that I had admired in my favorite and most influential teachers from my own high school days. Fortunately, Sandy and I were a part of the same church family. Her commitment will surely be missed.
