Douglas Allen Bowman, beloved husband, father and friend to all, died peacefully on May 14, 2025 surrounded by his family and good friend and brother, Mostafa Sedighizadeh. Born in Shaw, Mississippi on August 31, 1962. He spent his childhood in Ruleville and Pearl, Mississippi where he played football at Pearl High School and was a stand-out linebacker. Doug was a man of great intelligence always encouraging his colleagues to seek higher education. He never stopped learning and was an avid reader. He enjoyed reading history books about WW1, WW2, Winston Churchill and the influential writings of Mississippi native John Grisham. He was a proud graduate of Mississippi State University in Starkville Mississippi (Hail State) where he earned a bachelor's and master's degree in electrical engineering. He was currently pursuing a PHD degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Arkansas Fayetteville.
He met his future wife, Melissa ''Misi'' Joy Martin, at the local skating rink. They were happily married for 30 years. In 1993 they welcomed a beautiful baby boy and named him Jonathan, meaning the ''child was given as a gift from God''. He and his family moved to Little Rock where he was hired at Southwest Power Pool in 2008 for 17 years and 3 months until his death. He enjoyed working at SPP in the Engineering Department.
His beloved Misi died in 2015. They were happily married for 30 years. He met Kitty McArthur, who also worked at SPP. They were married on October 14, 2016 until his death on May 14, 2025.
Doug was a Lead Research and Development Engineer at Southwest Power Pool in Little Rock Arkansas. He has over 37 years of experience in the electric power systems industry ranging from substation and transmission line design, construction, and testing, to transmission system planning and research. His current area of expertise is power system modeling, grid stability analysis, Inverter Based Resources, and HVDC, as well as the development and delivery of engineering courses for graduate engineers. He has a BSEE and MSEE from Mississippi State University and is a Doctoral candidate at the University of Arkansas in Electric Power Systems. He has been an Adjunct Professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in its Systems Engineering Department and is currently an instructor for the IEEE Power and Energy Society. Mr. Bowman is a Senior Member of the IEEE, past Chair of the Arkansas Chapter of the IEEEE Power and Energy Society and a Professional Engineer in the state of Arkansas.
Doug was a man of exemplary character, showing intense love for family, friends and strangers alike. His kindness and patience will be remembered by everyone that knew him. He constantly pursued knowledge and education throughout his life. He was a teacher and a mentor to many who knew him and freely shared his knowledge and experience and was often sought after for advice and instruction, Although he lived in Arkansas in the later part of his life, his heart was always in the Mississippi Delta - he had a deep love and respect for the history, culture, and music of his birthplace.

I had the privilege of working with Doug at SPP, and he left a lasting impression on me both professionally and personally. He was incredibly kind, smart, and funny"always quick to lend a hand, share a laugh, or offer thoughtful guidance. What stood out most was his authenticity; he was genuinely himself in every interaction, and that made him someone people naturally trusted and admired.
Doug was so generous with his time and knowledge, and I learned so much from him"not just about the topics we worked on but also about how to be a caring, approachable, and supportive colleague. His presence made work better for everyone around him, and he will be deeply missed.
Doug made it easy to see his wonderful heart and his love of life.
I am deeply saddened by the news of Doug's passing. His passing is a tremendous loss for his family, friends, community, colleagues, our R&D at EPRI, and the industry-at-large. Doug was an inspirational learner, curious, kind, and always very generous with his time for others. His intuition for asking timely questions, and his commitment to acting on his increasing knowledge effectively made a lasting impression on me. I am grateful for having known and worked with Doug in my roles at EPRI and IEEE. I will miss his modesty and intellectual wit. Bless his soul.
I was truly, and wholeheartedly, saddened today to hear of the passing of Doug. Doug was a truly amazing human. I had the distinct pleasure and privilege of working with him in various research projects through EPRI, and interacting with him through the IEEE. He was a man of deep knowledge, passion and understanding in electrical engineering. However, what made him even more unique was his spiritual side. He was a true gentleman with some amazingly beautiful spiritual qualities, such as empathy, love for all whom he met, true kindness and humility. It was always a privilege talking with him on many deep concepts both technical (engineering) and spiritual. I ardently pray for the progress of his precious soul in all the worlds of God, as it ascends towards the Lord. Doug will be sorely missed by all.
Beautiful tribute to an incredible guy, Dougie was truly one of those rare people who walked this earth with such light and love that his very presence felt like a gift. He will be deeply missed.
I will continue to keep his family in my heart and prayers during this time.
Doug was an amazing person. I worked with him at Entergy and SPP. He was a great mentor and loyal friend. His nickname at work was the "Professor". Doug always pushed himself and those around him to learn more about the issue that needed to be resolved or researched. I will miss our conversations about work, religion, and life. He was famous for always having a cup of coffee and sloshing some out at some point, From that point forward, when he came into your office, he would set down his cup to talk with his hands, and leave a coffee ring. I wish he would spill his coffee on my desk or leave a ring now. Rest in Peace Douglas! Love you brother!
