I served in the Navy.

Dr. Peter Mackercher III am a Veteran.

of Mountain Home, AR

June 27, 1946 - November 25, 2024

Peter Angus Mackercher II was born in Ponca City, OK on June 27, 1946 to Peter Angus Mackercher, M.D. and Mildred Marie Wright.

Dr. Mackercher graduated from Ponca City High School (OK) in 1964. He then graduated from Westminister College (Fulton, MO) in 1968. After that, he went to the University of MO (Columbia, MO) where he completed medical school, as well an internship and residency in Internal Medicine and a Gastroenterology Fellowship.

He became a Lt. Commander in the Navy and served 2yrs at the Navy Hospital in Great Lakes, IL. In 1974, he married Ellen Annette Cooper, and he built a 40-year medical practice in Mountain Home, AR at Baxter Regional Hospital. He served in many leadership capacities in the medical field, and served on various boards (soccer, and church). He also served on the Advisory Council of ASU in Mountain Home from 1995-2001.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen, two children Rachel and Peter III (Bridget Doherty), four grandchildren: Malachi and Kale Mackercher-May of Mountain Home, AR, and Mackenzie and Peter IV Mackercher of St. Louis, MO, along with many nieces and nephews.

Dr. Mackercher is preceded in death by his parents, sister; Christina Hamilton Mackercher Humann, and brother-in-laws; Robert Chandler and Cecil Cooper.

Dr. Mackercher was an excellent husband, father, grandfather, friend, physician, and mentor to many. In his eyes, there was never a stupid question, only the one you were afraid to ask. His true specialty was listening.

I met Pete “Doctor Mac” in 1989 when I moved to Mountain Home fresh out of training. I spent the next thirty years trying to live up to the standards that he set by his example. He was a friend, mentor, counselor, and colleague to me as well as other physicians coming onto the staff at the hospital. He remained, for me, an exemplar of how to practice medicine and to be a good person. He had a powerful intellect and a generous heart; he always seemed to know when to use each, whether talking with patients or counseling colleagues in the art of medicine or life in general. In his professional life, he always put the patients’ needs first. In his personal life, family and the community were his priorities. He was a great listener when I needed to talk, gave wise counsel when I asked for it, and his laughter and twinkling eyes could brighten any day His passing has left a big void in the Twin Lakes community but I’m sure Heaven will make good use of his compassion, humor, and wisdom. He will be missed.

I was privileged to have worked with Doc for five years in GI Lab at BRMC. He was one of the most intelligent people that I have known. I remember that I'd just bring up any subject or place and just stand back and listen to him. I noticed that the obit mentioned the fact that he listened and trust me that is so true. He wanted the best for patients no matter who's patients they were. I went to him with concerns and he listened and acted upon them, and this was several years after working with him. Ellen I'm so sorry for your loss, Donnie went to be with the Lord 12 weeks ago today, so I'm sure that he can show Doc around Heaven. He always respected Doc's down to earth personality!! I'll be praying for comfort for you and your family. Trust me this isn't easy, lean on the Lord and he'll get you through even when you think that it's not possible.

Pete was my friend and excellent resource on a myriad of subjects. Even his body slowed him down, his sense of humor and desire to give of best never waned. He made a great impression on me during my 8 years of living in Mountain Home and being his pastor. He will be missed. His compassion and kindness always spoke to me. To Ellen and the family, my thoughts and prayers will have you in them because of your loss. Gary and Kim Tubb

Mountain Home was very fortunate when Pete and Ellen came to Mtn Home. They have been very active citizens, doing good. Pete not only brought his specialty but his involvement in the entire hospital, helping with our growth and helping maintain quality.
Thank you Pete and Ellen
