of Maumelle, AR
May 13, 1941 - August 26, 2020
Doug Coney Sr. of Maumelle left this earth on August 26 after a long, courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Woodson, Arkansas to Howard and Doris (Heflin) Coney on May 13, 1941. These were some of his favorite things:
His family was his life. He had tremendous pride in his sons, Doug Jr. (Dyana), Michael Todd (Tina), and his daughter Paige Keen (Jeff). His 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren were his delight. Gatherings at the Lake House were highlights of his summers. His fondest memories were of those days and of his 54 years with Betty Joyce who predeceased him in 2014. Together, they never missed an event where their three children performed: football, basketball, cheerleading. Doug and Betty were avid square dancers. They enjoyed visits and travel with Betty's sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Mike Trudell. He missed the close companionship he had had with his brothers Gary and Edward, but fondly remembered their youthful escapades. Doug married Marion Scott in 2016 and they lived happily ever after.
He loved the city of Maumelle where he lived for 45 years; he was a volunteer firefighter for 24 years, and chief for 16 years. Later, he became a civil service commissioner for the city. He had great affection for Betty's Crye-Leike realty gang and stayed close even after Betty's death.
More of his favorite things included acapella singing, building houses, and anything Elvis. His England High School class of '59 was as dear to him as brothers and sisters and he loved them all. His BFF Bud Northern stayed close for 60 years. Doug never met a stranger.
Paramount on his favorite things list was his true and unwavering faith. His relationship with Jesus was personal. He never fell asleep without reciting his prayer list and words of devotion. His years in local churches, lastly New Life, gave him indescribable joy.
COVID has changed our lives, but friends and family who feel safe doing so, are invited to stop by Doug's home, 118 Osage Drive in Maumelle, to share stories between the hours of 4-7 pm on Friday, August 28. A graveside service will be held prior to interment at Riverwood Memorial Gardens on Saturday, August 29 at 10 am. COVID mask and distancing requirements necessary.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Arkansas Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial. www.arfallenfirefighters.org.
Special thanks to Dr. Brad Baltz and to Arkansas Hospice for their attentive care.

I got to know Doug at the Maumelle Community Center Gym.
Seemed like he knew every single person who walked through the door. Always a smile and words of encouragement. If ever there was a man who loved his neighbor as himself it was Doug. He didn't have to talk about his Faith..he lived it.

So sorry to hear about Doug! He was best friends with my ex-husband (Carlson Thomas). He and Doug ''owned Asher Avenue''! Prayers 🙏 for the family! Hazel Thomas

Our condolences to the Coney family. Doug was a shining bright light and will be surely missed. It won't be the same at Christmas when Doug and Marion always hung the huge Christmas wreaths at the front of our Crye-Leike office. We will miss and never forget their kindness and attendance at our events! RIP. ❤️🙏🙏🙏

Doug your dad was one in a million he was always nice to me. Always had a smile. He will be missed. But you always remember he is always in your ❤ heart. Bea

Doug Coney Jr. and family,
Sympathies are sent your way for the loss of your Dad. Praying that the Lord will surround you with his comfort and love. Your parents were wonderful! They were always so kind and full of life. God has welcomed your Dad into his loving arms celebrating his child is home. May your many memories of your Dad comfort you all.

So sorry my wife and I can't be there to share a lot of old stories and fun times we had with Doug and Betty. I am one of Doug's Central High 59er's. My wife and I knew Doug and Betty for 60 years plus. Doug was quite a teaser and joy to be around. I remember when we were in about the 10th grade and we passed each other in the hall at Central, Doug formed his hand as if to try and put a hex on me and said acooiee! The next time I saw him I asked what does acooiee mean and he said baadeer and walked off laughing. Still have no idea what it means if anything. I think that was one of Doug's many laughable inside jokes. We kids were lucky in so much as we had a great place to go, Lake Nixon, and chill with other kids. Lake Nixon had an open air dance floor and a jukebox, like on the tv show Happy Days. Doug and Betty were quite good dancers and my wife and I would try to mimic them on the dance floor. If there had been a contest I'm sure they would have won. Anyway lot of fun and kept us busy and off the streets. Another thing i'm not sure if you knew, but Doug was quite a wrestler in the intermural high school circuit and won a lot of ribbons. Doug was always there for anyone who needed help and he never asked for anything in return. I was very fortunate to be able to call him my friend. He will be greatly missed.

to a very good friend.

Our friendship with Doug & Betty spans 30 plus years. Doug always had a smile on his face. He left a legacy of love, service and loyalty that will forever be etched in our community.

Such sad news, however, such fond and fun memories of times spent with Doug and Betty.

Condolences to the family and friends of Doug from an old, old friend Phil Lemley

I hate to hear of your dad passing. I know you have wonderful memories of him and your mom. I havent seen you in years but I still love you from way back when. God bless your family.

Doug was a dear friend for the past few years.
He was very helpful to me after my back surgery.
Doug and Marion are very special friends to me.
I will always be great-full to Doug for walking with me in the mornings and our conversations over a cup of coffee .

I new ''Mr. Coney'' from my childhood in Meadowcliff. Though that was over 50 years ago, I still remember he was quick with a smile and always made me laugh. It was a great neighborhood to grow up in. I could always go to the Coney's, who lived across the street, anytime, day or night. They were the best. My heart goes out to the family.

To Doug's family, I know the pain you must be feeling. But also the relief that your Dad and husband is out of pain and with our heavenly Father. I have known your Dad or knew who he was since the 60's I would watch him and your Mom dance at Lake Nixon and Rosedale. He knew my husband before that. We got to know them when we were all first married. They were always smiling and friendly. We loved them both. They were proud of you kids. Try and remember the good times. Be happy for him.
I didn't get to meet his wife but my prayers are with you. I know Doug was blessed to have you. My prayers are with you all 🙏🙏🙏❤️
Sincerely, Bobbie Highfill.

We, the staff of the Outpatient Infusion (3rd floor) was sad to hear of the passing of Mr. Coney. He will truly be missed. We met Mr. Coney over a year ago and every time we saw him, he was very sweet and kind. He always asked how we were and you could tell he was just not asking to be asking, he was asking because he truly wanted to know. We enjoyed talking to him. We will keep the family lifted in prayer. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with the family. We will miss Ms. Coney but we thank God for the pleasant memories we have. On behalf of Debbie, Joy, Tanisha and myself, Melissa, we will keep the family lifted in prayer.

Paige, Mr Jerry, Kendra and I are so sorry about your Dad's passing. We pray you and your brother's dreams are full of sweet memories.

Having known Doug, his brothers and mother and father since our youth days I have great memories of times together.
Especially fun times at the youth center dancing the night away.
Doug was a little older and when he asked me to dance I felt special as he was one of the many older cool guys in our group and a great dancer. Always a gentleman and always seemed happy and having a good time.
Our Lord now has another precious soul in his care.
My prayers are sent to his family at this sad time.

I knew Doug for 6 years while serving as a young police officer in Maumelle. Doug was always smiling and I never saw him any other way. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends

I'm very sorry to hear of Doug's passing. He was a fine fellow and I was glad to have known him. I worked in some form or fashion with him and all three of his children and his son-in-law and there is not a finer family out there. I know he was proud of all of them and rightfully so. Karen and I send our condolences to all of his family. Best wishes and sympathy to everyone for your loss.

I was NEVER in Doug's presence when he didn't have a mega watt smile and a grisly bear hug for me.... the perfect gentleman and smart dresser!! You ALWAYS felt lighter and brighter when you had been around him! A thought for his whole family: There is no more weariness...there is no more pain...God gives his children wings and sets them free... may the love that will last and the memories that will linger...now set you free! God Bless and keep you all!

To Marion and family members,
I haven't known Doug as long as a lot of other people in Maumelle, but I agree with everyone that he was a friendly and a happy man. Please accept my condolences during this time of sorrow. Cordially, Jim Payseno

Our condolences to Marion, Doug Jr., Todd, Paige and all the grandkids. Doug was someone who was liked by all. He had a dynamic personality with a smile that was irresistable. He showed the love and kindness that Jesus taught when he was on earth. He will be missed here in Maumelle. Prayers!!

Love, thoughts & prayers to the family...we're thinking of you!
- John 14:1-4

I only met Mr. Coney a couple of times but if the three fine children he raised are any indication of the man he was and the life he lead I'm sure he was a great person and will be sorely missed. Praying for each of you.

Dear Marion & family - I wanted to extend my sympathies to you all! I was on the greeting team with Doug at GLR for a few years until the WLR campus opened. He was always so kind to me, the ''newbie'', and I loved that he usually called me Susie. No one else has ever called me that! Kind, handsome, dapper, a lover of people, an all around fine man - that's the Doug I knew! May God heal your broken hearts & guide your footsteps through the upcoming days.

RIP Dear Friend !
Love , Tommy and Rose

Dear Marion and family,
Doug finished his spiritual fight strong here on this earth.
He always had a special way in making people feel special when he would greet you at NLC.
Our tears are temporary for now, for we know we will see Doug again. When we would walk in the church doors , Seeing Doug and Marion there to greet on Sundays would always put a smile immediately in our hearts. , They both lit up the foyer with their hugs ! We would say, ''Doug you are a well sharp dress man'' and he would laugh at loud.
We will continue to pray for Gods perfect peace and comfort for all his family.

Todd,
My deepest sympathy to you and your family.
Cathy Alley

To Doug's family and friends: What a great gentleman...We spent many years having a dance or two on Steve's Show, at the Optimist Club, and wherever there was dancing. He and Betty attended the Steve's Show cruise years ago. Doug always had a smile. On the dance floor, he was the King of Smooth. Snappy dresser, always. He will truly be missed. Love, Sandy
❤️❤️❤️

I am so sorry to learn of Doug's passing. He was an outstanding citizen of Maumelle and a great person. I enjoyed my time with him on the Civil Service Commision where he served with distinction. I remember our time in Maumelle so fondly and he was a important part of that. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Marion and the entire family. Maumelle has lost a one of it's best. He will be missed.

I am so sorry for your loss. Doug was always friendly and cheerful. We will miss him.

Loved this man. He will be sorely missed.

Doug was one of the first people that I met when we moved to Maumelle. I was on the Maumelle Volunteer Fire Department with Doug serving as my Chief. He always made you feel good anytime you encountered him with a smile and a handshake. I will miss his firm handshakes and a pat on my shoulder. He was a big part of Maumelle's success in more than one way! He was willing to do whatever it took to get a job done. Our prayers is for peace and comfort at this time for Marion, Doug Jr., Todd and Paige and their families! He will be missed by all of Maumelle but welcomed by all those in Heaven!
