Doug Coney Sr. of Maumelle left this earth on August 26 after a long, courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Woodson, Arkansas to Howard and Doris (Heflin) Coney on May 13, 1941. These were some of his favorite things:

His family was his life. He had tremendous pride in his sons, Doug Jr. (Dyana), Michael Todd (Tina), and his daughter Paige Keen (Jeff). His 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren were his delight. Gatherings at the Lake House were highlights of his summers. His fondest memories were of those days and of his 54 years with Betty Joyce who predeceased him in 2014. Together, they never missed an event where their three children performed: football, basketball, cheerleading. Doug and Betty were avid square dancers. They enjoyed visits and travel with Betty's sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Mike Trudell. He missed the close companionship he had had with his brothers Gary and Edward, but fondly remembered their youthful escapades. Doug married Marion Scott in 2016 and they lived happily ever after.

He loved the city of Maumelle where he lived for 45 years; he was a volunteer firefighter for 24 years, and chief for 16 years. Later, he became a civil service commissioner for the city. He had great affection for Betty's Crye-Leike realty gang and stayed close even after Betty's death.

More of his favorite things included acapella singing, building houses, and anything Elvis. His England High School class of '59 was as dear to him as brothers and sisters and he loved them all. His BFF Bud Northern stayed close for 60 years. Doug never met a stranger.

Paramount on his favorite things list was his true and unwavering faith. His relationship with Jesus was personal. He never fell asleep without reciting his prayer list and words of devotion. His years in local churches, lastly New Life, gave him indescribable joy.

COVID has changed our lives, but friends and family who feel safe doing so, are invited to stop by Doug's home, 118 Osage Drive in Maumelle, to share stories between the hours of 4-7 pm on Friday, August 28. A graveside service will be held prior to interment at Riverwood Memorial Gardens on Saturday, August 29 at 10 am. COVID mask and distancing requirements necessary.
