John A. KincannonI am a Veteran.

of North Little Rock, AR

May 18, 1927 - July 15, 2020

John A. Kincannon, age 93, passed away peacefully at his home on July 15, 2020.
Born May 18, 1927, in Scotland, Arkansas, the youngest of 6 children of John and Sarah Kincannon. John excelled in basketball which enabled him to graduate from Arkansas State Teacher's College in Conway and play for the New York Knickerbockers. It was in college where he met the love of his life, Phyllis Allen. After serving in the Navy, they were married for 70 years, had three sons, and traveled the world together.
Upon settling in North Little Rock, John and his partners founded Apartment House Builders, Metro Disaster Specialists, and Associated Management. He loved the people he worked with and treated them as extended family. He was active in the construction industry nationally as well as locally as president of both the Greater Little Rock and Arkansas State Home Builders Association.
Traveling with family and friends (along with golf) were John's passions. An avid sports fan, John always had the best big-screen television he could find. He cherished mornings with his wife spent drinking coffee on the deck at Greers Ferry. And in his day, nobody could cook a better steak.
With his infectious smile and disarming personality John never met a stranger, a gift he retained his entire life. His experience as a coach and educator spilled over to every relationship, enabling him to lift up and encourage anyone he encountered.
Moving to and eventually retiring in Maumelle, John and Phyllis were charter members of the First United Methodist Church, where he was involved in bible study and the Thursday morning Men's Group.
John is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, wife Phyllis, son John and his wife Lena. He is survived by sons Jim Kincannon (Susan) and Dr. Jay Kincannon (Debbie), grandchildren Sarah, Juliana(Jordan Crews), Rachel Gillespie(Tyler), John Martin (Lauren), Johnny, Lauren, and Katy. John was also very proud of his 3 great-grandchildren, Will and Evie Gillespie and Relena Kincannon-Crews.
The family is especially thankful to Beth Croston for her years of dedicated service and to caregivers Lora Williams and Johnetta Thomas.
A genuinely humble man, John would have wanted everyone to be comfortable in celebrating his life and would encourage anyone concerned about COVID 19 to attend the services virtually. The in-person visitation is Monday, July 20 from 5-6:00 pm at Roller Chenal. To allow for social distancing, last names beginning with the letters A-M from 5-5:30 and letters N-Z from 5:30 to 6 pm. A Memorial Service for John is scheduled for 10:00 am Tuesday, July 21 at First United Methodist Church Maumelle (limited occupancy) to be live streamed via Facebook Live. Livestream graveside service to follow at Rest Hills Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 1201 Edgewood, Maumelle, AR 72113.

I was looking up John Kincannon, because I was trying to tell a friend about my high school algebra teacher and found out he recently passed away. My deepest condolences to his family.
Mr. Kincannon was my Algebra teacher when I was a freshman at Redondo High School in 1960. He was of course the school's basketball coach as well. What I remember about him was that he seemed like a genuinely nice guy. Again, my deepest condolences.

To the Kincannon family: I have only known you "from a distance" as a Pulaski County resident for nearly 30 years. What John, his wife, and family have done for this County, this State, and our community cannot be measured or listed here. Suffice it to say that John's legacy is known far and wide, in a certain Party's politics, and in the way our State conducts itself in many things. Phyllis has been holding a place for him for some time; now they will be together again, and always. Rest In Peace, John. I know the Master is getting ready to say, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

I had the good fortune of of knowing Mr. Kincannon for the last 17 years and all the nice things that have been said about him here are so true. He was a gentlemen in every way! He would always take the time for anyone and was truly an amazing person!
I remember one time sitting down and visiting with him several years ago and what started out as just a short in passing conversation turned into over an hour of discussing and sharing our views on sports today and how athletes prepare to play their sport. This was when I found out about his past and about him being a former NY Knickerbocker. I found myself hanging on every word, his knowledge and understanding of all sports was simply amazing... The longer we spoke the more I realized that he had an incredible understanding of how to prepare and practice to become successful. He had a "great" coach mentality in that he understood what drives an athlete in whatever the sport to be the best that they could be. He truly understood the importance of the little things, the intangibles of preparation and the attitude in which you play the game. It became very clear to me what made him very successful as an athlete and as a business man. After our conversation while driving home I remember feeling like I had just spoken with one of the great coaches of our time! He was truly an amazing individual! Rest in peace Mr. Kincannon and thank you for sharing your knowledge, passion and wisdom with us all... My prayers are with you and your family!

Papa John was like a father to me. For over 45 years he coached, mentored, and treated me like I was part of the Kincannon family.Uncle John leaves a great legacy of family, full of love, hope, inspiration, and leadership. Uncle John was a winner in everything he did and a true champion in his heart, mind, and soul. He will always be remembered by my family as a great Father and Family Man. We will miss his great smile and his competitive spirit. Our love and prayers go out to the Kincannon family. Sincerely PJS.

I had the great fortune of knowing this man most of my life. He was always a gracious and kind soul. The memories I have of he, his wife and family with our family are etched in my mind and heart. The fun times and sad times are something I will always cherish. I pray for all the family for they have truly lost not only a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather but a good friend, mentor and advisor. I know the good Lord is watching over them and holding them in his arms at their time of grief.

Mr. Kincannon even thought I was not close to you as my Wife Karen Wells was but I always remember the times that we went to Conferences and work functions. Karen though the world of you and you will be missed. As Paul wrote "But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep". 1 Thessalonians 4: 13-14. Until we meet again my brother in Christ.

John and Phyllis were our heroes, our mentors, our family. From the time we met them over 40 years ago we observed that they were family oriented, were good businessmen, and we watched how they lived their lives. By their example, we learned how to live our lives. We loved them and will miss them.

In our lives, you realize there is a role for everyone you meet. Some will test you, use you, love you and some will teach you. The ones who are truly important are the ones who bring out the best in you. They are the rare and amazing people who remind you why it’s worth it. John A was that rare and great man... a boss, a leader, a mentor but most of all a dear friend. I am truly blessed to have been able to work with such a caring family man and his family for over 40 years. I will truly miss you and your loving contagious smile! Prayers offered for all of his family for peace and strength of heart during this time.

I am very very fortunate to have you known big John. For many many years. Lots of times like a second father. As well all worked and socialized together with our families and especially friends. We would always every Monday morning reflected on the weekend sporting events. Especially Razorback football and basketball. Basketball was. Big Johns favorite. This man will always hold a special place in my heart. Along with his remaining family.

Beloved and Faithful Father; trusted boss; effective leader; consummate coach; Iron-Byron golfer; gentle soul. An honor to have followed him for 42 years. Few of us were assembled by The Almighty with as many fine parts. Journey well my faithful and good friend.
