Montie Barringer Calvert

of Sherwood, AR

January 22, 1928 - July 9, 2020

Montie Barringer Calvert passed away peacefully and went to be with the Lord on July 9, 2020. She was born January 22, 1928, in Marks, Mississippi, to Mary and Ben Gray Barringer.

Montie loved growing up in Marks, and talked often of her childhood memories of spending time at her grandmother's home on the banks of the Coldwater River. Following in her mother's and grandmother's footsteps, she attended Blue Mountain College for two years, then transferred and graduated from the University of Mississippi, where she was the president of the Mortar Board national honor society.

Her dad bought her a baby grand piano when she was twelve years old. That piano was cherished over the years, and she played it her entire life. Montie used her talent for the Lord and for the community throughout her lifetime. She was organist at First Baptist Church of Marks. After marrying Phillip Calvert and moving to Marked Tree, Arkansas, she became the pianist at First United Methodist Church, and played the piano at many town events.

In addition to the piano, Montie sang in the church choir, and developed a love for playing handbells for worship services.

One of her biggest joys in life was teaching Spanish and English in high school. Wonderful memories were made on her trips to Mexico with students. Later in life, she became a piano teacher, and absolutely adored her pupils. Her very favorite pupils were her grandchildren, who got their lessons when they came to visit. Even her son-in-law took lessons!
Montie demonstrated a servant's heart, and the people around town were blessed by her actions. She was a member of Marked Tree Woman's Club, Beta Sigma Phi, and Delta Kappa Gamma.

In the latter years of life, she and Phillip moved to Sherwood, Arkansas, where she was a member of Cornerstone Bible Fellowship.

She exemplified her servanthood in her roles as mother and grandmother. One of her grandchildren described her this way: ''For her grandchildren, she was the first to greet at the door but the last to sit down at the table. Her love was both individualized and multiplied with each addition to her crew of grandchildren. She clearly believed she had bragging rights by the way she spoke of them.''

Over the years, when others described Montie, the phrase most often used was, ''She was a true southern belle''.

Words are inadequate to describe what a wonderful mother she was. She will forever be loved and forever be missed. Her life was a living example of the Bible verse, ''With humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves'' (Philippians 2:3B).

Montie was preceded in death by her parents as well by her husband, Phillip E. Calvert; brothers Ben Gray Barringer, Jr., and James Mack Barringer.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Ann Reginelli (Bruce) of Plano, Texas, and Carol Nutt (Vic) of Sherwood, Arkansas; grandchildren Lee Nutt (Megan), Natalie Carroll (Ryan), Melissa Van Scyoc (Cody), Christopher Nutt, Brent Reginelli, and Ryan Reginelli; great-grandchildren Ethan Carroll, Naomi Nutt, Levi Van Scyoc, Katelynn Carroll, Philip Nutt, Seth Van Scyoc, and Rose Nutt; and sister-in-law Christine Calvert.

Memorials may be given to Cornerstone Bible Fellowship, 7351 Warden Rd., Sherwood, AR 72120.

A private service will be held at Roller-Owens Funeral Home, 5509 John F. Kennedy Blvd., North Little Rock, AR 72116, on July 14, 2020, at 2:00 P.M.

Burial will be at Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery. The cemetery does not allow graveside services at this time due to the pandemic.

Many of you have expressed a desire to come support us with your attendance. We appreciate your love, however we are restricting attendance to family to lessen community health risks. Thank you for your understanding.

Ann and Carol.
I'm so sorry for your loss, our prayers are with you all. Mrs. Calvert was such a wonderful person to all. She never met a stranger. I used to love listening to stories when she and my mother got together. She will be missed and I know she is in heaven seeing my mother and all her other loved ones who have passed on.
Peace and Blessings,

Just before reading your beautiful words here, I had written on Facebook what a “true southern belle” Montie was, and she really was. We were lucky that you all came into our lives in Marked Tree. Montie made a huge difference to our community and far beyond. I’m so sorry for your loss. But for the conditions of this time, I would see you Carol and Ann and families on Tuesday. My thoughts are with you all. ❤️❤️

We are so sorry for your loss. Mrs. Montie was one of a kind. I sat beside her for several years at the Methodist Churc in Marked Tree as we completed the Discipleship series. She and Mr. Phillip were truly salt and light.
