Betty Alice Winfrey

of Damascus, AR

May 5, 1925 - May 1, 2020

Betty Alice (Lovejoy) Winfrey, 94, of Damascus, Arkansas, passed away on Friday, May 1, 2020. Born in London, England on May 5, 1925, she was a daughter to the late James and Alice (Blackman) Lovejoy. Betty is also preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Virgil William Winfrey; her siblings, James (Gladys) Lovejoy, Lena (Arthur) Hart, Jeanie Lovejoy, and brother-in-law Les Sheppard, all of London, England, and her granddaughter, Cindy Winfrey.

Betty met the man she fell in love with, Virgil, during World War II, in London, England, and married him on June 6, 1945. After the war, they boarded the Queen Mary and sailed to the United States to start a family in the small town of Damascus, Arkansas, where they spent 64 years of their lives together, until Virgil's death in 2010.

Betty was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who devoted her life to her family. She was of the Baptist faith. Betty enjoyed spending time with her family, making quilts and going to yard sales. She was loved and will be missed by all who knew her.
Those left to mourn her passing are her sons, John Winfrey and his wife, Linda, and Tony Winfrey, both of Damascus; granddaughter, Jennifer Warren and her husband, Jason of Atkins, Arkansas; close family friend, Todd Turner of Damascus, who she thought of and loved as another son; a sister Barbara Sheppard, of Eastbourne, England, and many other loving family and friends.

We would like to thank Tiffany Williams, Shutonnia Scaife, Tiffany Parks, Lonez Foster, Velvet Lagway, Pam Able, Brandy Keasling, Angela Applegate, Mary Hocutt, Lesily Greenlee, Charice Bryant, Courtney Hensley, Blake Barrett, and the many others with Heritage Living Center. These ladies loved our Mom, and without a doubt, our Mom loved them. They treated her like royalty, and we could not thank them enough for their kindness they showed her over the years, and especially the last two weeks.

The family will have a private graveside service at Spires Cemetery in Damascus.

I took care of Mrs. Betty for 2.5 years while at Heritage. She was such a wonderful lady and loved when I brought my daughters to visit her. She loved when I did her hair and nails. She was truly loved and will live forever in my heart. Prays for all her family and friends.
