Betty Rae Shipman Hampton passed away Saturday, April 4, 2020 at Mountain View, Arkansas. The youngest of ten children, Betty was born to William Jasper and Lillie Balentine Shipman July 10, 1939.

After high school, Betty married the love of her life, Hubert Hampton August 19, 1957. They were married 50 years. They lived in Manitou Springs, CO while Hubert was serving in the army. They then moved to Kansas City to work until retiring to Fifty-Six, Arkansas where they owned and operated a country store for a number of years. Betty enjoyed working as a waitress in Mountain View for many years. She loved visiting with locals and tourists, making many out of state friends who would ask for her by name. She particularly enjoyed the morning shift because the men of a certain age would come to the restaurant between 8-9 to solve the world's problems. She loved the camaraderie and sometimes heated discussions with this group and other waitresses.

Betty was a member of Fifty-Six Missionary Baptist Church in Fifty-Six, Arkansas.

Survived by her sister, Meladean Petersen and many nephews, nieces and friends. Betty had no children but was like a mother to many relatives and friends and will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert, parents, brothers Verle, Merle, Eugene and Jewel Shipman and sisters Iva McCook, Ina Pendergraft, Alma Lee Sutterfield and Zelnora Shipman.

Because of Health Department regulations related to Covid 19, a private graveside service for immediate family, officiated by Rev. Junior Barham, will be held with burial at Fifty-Six cemetery. A memorial / celebration of life for friends and family will be held at a later date.

I met Betty and Hubert when I took a summer job in 1975 at Blanchard Springs Caverns and rented the small house next to their Texaco Station/Store in Fifty-Six. In 1977 I rented that house until June 1978 when I was transferred to the Ouachita National Forest where I retired in 2010. I was almost 24 when I met them, and now an older man at 68, I have never forgotten the many kindnesses shown me by this wonderful couple. Through the years I have passed the little house a good number of times and each time I have, wonderful memories of them and my youth come flooding back. May peace and love comfort your family.
