Afton Coleman Treat, age 95 of Morrilton, Arkansas went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 17th, 2019 in Morrilton. He was born May 27th, 1924 to Floyd and Gertha (Williams) Treat in Timbo, Arkansas.
Afton was drafted into the army in 1943, in Tacoma, Colorado. He served in the 99th Infantry Battalion (Separate) of the United States Army established on July 10, 1942. The Infantry Battalion received specialized training and received attention usually not given to small units. They were inspected by President Roosevelt and its duties were discussed in a conference between Winston Churchill and General Eisenhower. It was intended to become the security force for the Norwegian Royal Family and the government in the event a battle for Norway would be initiated in the later stages of the war. After the war, King Haakon VII made the 99th Infantry Battalion (Separate) his honorary guards. The Infantry Battalion also fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After his service in the army, Afton joined the Air Force, during which time he fulfilled a life-long goal of earning his pilot's license flying a Taylorcraft monoplane. After the Air Force, he served as a member of the Air National Guard.
While on leave, Afton met his future wife at the local roller rink. He told Joe Al Stewart that he would marry her without even knowing her name. He married Jean Storey on December 24th, 1949 in Mountain View, Arkansas. They moved to Flint, Michigan where their daughter Marcina was born and he worked at General Motors. He learned the machinist trade in Tulsa, Oklahoma at McDonnell Douglas. Afterward, he moved to Wichita, Kansas to work for Boeing and their daughter Phyllis was born. He also worked for Rocketdyne. After returning to Mountain View, Arkansas they worked on their farm at Timbo, Arkansas where Afton also enjoyed woodcraft and making furniture. At the age of 33, he was called by the Lord to preach, which he did for more than 50 years. He retired from ministry at White Water Missionary Baptist Church.
Afton is preceded in death by Jean, his wife of 65 years; his parents; his sister Jean (JC) Avey; brother Hollis (Mary) Treat; niece Lisa (John) Plyer; brother-in-law Roy Balentine; sister-in-law Ernestine (Von) Ivy; and in-laws Mattie (Whitfield) and Luther Storey.
Afton is survived by his daughter Marcina (Curtis) Lancaster of Mountain View; Phyllis Treat of Heber Springs; granddaughter April (Ray) Brown of Conway; sister Irene Balentine of Russellville; sister Linda Sue White of Kansas City, Missouri; and a host of nieces and nephews.
