Virgie Ramsey

of Russell, IL

September 23, 1914 - September 29, 2019

Virgie Ramsey, age 105, of Russell, Illinois, passed away Sunday, September 29, 2019, in Illinois. She was born September 23, 1914, in Parthenon, Arkansas, in the "Sally House" on Shop Creek, the only birth during which her mother was attended by a doctor, and was the last surviving of ten children born to Osborne and Gertie (Swain) Casey. Her father raised cotton and the children were expected to work in the fields, starting at age six. She recalled that her oldest brother, Dennis, would get up early and go to the field to build a fire so the younger ones would be able to warm themselves. Her brothers and sisters were Dennis, Velma, Arthur, Audie, Dale, Garland, Imogene, Mary Jo and Geneva.

Virgie married Oford Ramsey, of Deer, Arkansas, in 1932, a marriage that lasted almost forty-five years, until he passed away in 1977. They had three daughters, Virginia, Christine and Cleta; seven grandchildren, Timothy, Stephen, Robert, Jeffrey, Debbie, Anne and John; thirteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family moved from Newton County in 1948 and farmed in Batavia, Arkansas. Virgie was a member of Batavia Baptist Church. She worked at the Levi Strauss. Virgie was also employed by Nagle Chase Manufacturing, Lyon Manufacturing, and Hammond Organ Company. She and Oford moved back to Arkansas upon retiring after having worked many years in Chicago.

She enjoyed being a grandmother, and in her retirement years she gardened, made quilts, crocheted, walked, worked crossword puzzles and baked pies. After her return, she was a member of Woodland Heights Baptist Church. Virgie always planted a large garden and canned enough to see the family through the winter months. Her biscuits and gravy were popular with everyone, and she credited cooking on a wood stove for the excellent results. She once talked about things she liked, which included pecan coffee cake, memories, the first new growth in spring, the first ripe tomato, tart apples, coloring eggs at Easter, morning walks, flowers, especially blue ones, reading and sewing. As she was blessed with good health, she was able to enjoy her later years, even beyond her century milestone.

Visitation was Saturday, October 5, 2019, at Roller-Christeson Funeral Home.

Funeral service was 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 5, 2019, at Roller-Christeson Funeral Home, with Bro. Marshall Boggs officiating.

Interment was in Maplewood Cemetery.

Family and friends served as pallbearers.
