Lois Virginia Stokes

of Maumelle, AR

March 17, 1925 - July 13, 2019

Lois Virginia Stokes, age 94, of Maumelle, Arkansas passed from this life to her heavenly eternal life on July 13, 2019. She was born March 17, 1925, in Clarendon, Arkansas, the daughter of Joel and Olivia Stevens. She was predeceased by sisters Nettie, and Lucy Belle and brothers Woodrow and Alfred Stevens. She was married to Tom Stokes for 54 years. Tom was the love of her life and preceded her in death. They had five children: Donald Gene Stokes (Patsy) of Crockett, TX; Patricia McCastlain (Jimmy) of Brinkley; Sarah Esch (Bill) of Overland Park, KS; Judy Brady (Jim) of Maumelle and Boyce Stokes (Ellen) of Mineola, TX and loved by nine grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Lois was known for her wonderful cooking and loved having people in her home. She lived in Monroe Co. for 82 years and always stressed the importance of education to her children and was very proud to receive her GED and a few college credits late in life. She loved flowers and gardening and always had fresh flowers in her home. Lois won many awards at the Tri-County Fair, especially first place for her apple pie!
She was famous for marking things with fingernail polish and spray paint. Beauty shop appointments had to be kept every Friday. She was a tad impatient at times and all things should be done quickly and well. But she loved her soap operas (As the World Turns and Bold and the Beautiful). Meals were always served at the same time, using good table manners. Her power nap time was always 15 minutes after the soap operas. Lois loved her pet Pomeranian Bitsy, her American Eskimo Huskie Kojak, and her Siamese cat Muffin.
She was an avid game player, especially cards. All of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren learned to play cards with her at a very young age and knew that she would never let them win -- they had to earn their wins! Lois had a few rules for her grandkids, as well, these included eating home-made popsicles, only 1 coke per day, jello with fruit for Bo and beans and cornbread for Michelle.
Lois was a dedicated follower of her Savior Jesus Christ and active member of the First United Methodist Churches in Holly Grove, Clarendon, and Maumelle. Her faith provided a source of strength and she dedicated many hours of service to them all of her life. She worked Vacation Bible School until she was 90 years old and was an active member of "Church Chicks" Sunday school class. Lois was also a member of a local bunco group.
Her latest move to Stonehaven Assisted Living in Maumelle proved to be a great final home. A home which provided her an expanded group of new friends who provided many fun hours of card playing, bingo games and fellowship with her "table mates."
Lois was a great mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and mother-in-law. She was most pleased when people called her a great and faithful servant of Jesus Christ. She never forgot birthdays and loved all the holidays -- decorating, cooking, and game playing.
Lois was a true farmer's wife and truly understood all the ups and downs of farm life. She loved being part of her small farming community in Holly Grove. She was an active member of her local church, the local school organizations as her children grew up, and the Holly Grove Women's Club, Monroe County EHC, and acted as a local election worker for many years.

My Aunt Lois Stokes has entered the Gates of Heaven with Jesus Christ in her heart. She loved the Lord with ALL her heart ! I remember the holiday meals at her home in Holly Grove ,Arkansas. Table manners was what she taught me. If you eat at her table, you better watch your manners or she would call you out on them. I loved her for that. She really was a great cook. She always wanted what was BEST for her children. Ellen and Boyce Stokes are my age and are the ones that stayed on the farm till his spraying business took him to Texas. About the time her husband, Tom Stokes, passed , she had asked her brother in law, Jerry Stokes, to put a roof on the Church there in Holly Grove. I will always remember that and other things about Aunt Lois Stokes. Rest in Peace. See you again One Day in Heaven. Love U.
