Henry Grady Miller, Jr.

of Little Rock, AR

March 6, 1929 - June 2, 2019

Henry Grady Miller, Jr, 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 2, 2019. He was born in Little Rock on March 6, 1929 to Emily Sturges Miller and Henry Grady Miller, Sr. He is survived by his daughters Emily Sturges Miller of Encinitas, CA and Mary Ann Miller of Conway, AR. He is preceded in death by his loving wife Mary Ann Causey Miller, his son James Robert Mayfield, and his sister Robin Miller Hartley. He had seven grandchildren.

Grady, affectionately known by his childhood friends as Bro Miller, was kind and generous. He was born and raised in Little Rock, an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, and was involved in several non-profits over the course of his long life. He served in the Air Force and was stationed in Florida and Texas. His love for education ran deep, and was an alumnus of Princeton University, University of Arkansas and University of Texas, where he studied history, economics, and architecture.

After finishing university, he worked as an architect, his first passion, before running the family's Southwest Land Company that include farms in Lonoke and Des Arc, Arkansas. The nephew of the honorable Senator Joe T. and Ewilda Robinson, he dutifully and lovingly cared for the Senator's legacy.

Grady Miller led by example. He will be remembered for his love of God, family, country, rich memory of history, extensive generosity, sense of humor, great smile, and his loving heart.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital and Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Grady and MaryAnn were a large part of my life growing up. Best times were usually just getting to hang out with him when he impromptu would call me & Emily over and say "get in the truck girls, we're leaving". That may mean going to the store, the farm, the mountain, the office, whatever - it was always fun and interesting to be with him! He had a deep love for our Lord, a very deep love and commitment to family and friends. He showed this to us all everyday in words and actions. He is greatly loved and missed. Such a kind soul, I know that everyone waiting in Heaven is rejoicing that he is home.

When I think of LIttle Rock, there are a number of special names and faces that surface in my memory. One of those is of a quiet, gentle and generous man, Grady MIller. I first met him in the mid 70's, and we remained friends through the years. And when in LIttle Rock, Lou Ann and I tried to see he and Mary Ann. He and Mary Ann supported our ministry with Campus Crusade for Christ (Cru) for the last six years I was on staff. I will never forget him, and told him how much I loved him about 2 years ago while in Little Rock. I deeply regret not being able to attend his service, Friend, a last greeting. Here, there or in the air.

Allow me to share some thoughts regarding my longtime friendship with Grady. How blessed I have been since our Lord brought us together as colleagues with an architectural firm about 50 years ago. When Grady learned that I was renting a one room apartment on Battery Street in downtown Little Rock, he asked if I would move to his mother's empty home on Edgehill in the Heights while she was away in Florida during the summer. He made it sound like I was doing him a favor. As years passed, Grady an I had joyful times along with inevitable pain n and sorrow. One particular difficult and dark night, when I was sitting alone and silent in my living room, Grady walked up the stairs, and into the house. I don't remember if we spoke. It didn't matter. It was enough that he wanted to sit with me for awhile. Though I consider Grady to be a confidant, partner, best friend and brother, I am also honored that the love of his life, Mary Ann, considered me her surrogate son. I am also very thankful that I have been grafted to a limb on the Miller family tree. I love you all. And to my gracious, generous, gentle and faithful friend, I know you are rejoicing with Mary Ann, Jim, and the friends and family who have proceeded you. As we spent the last few weeks with you in the hospital, I didn't say much to you. I hope it was enough to just sit with you for awhile. Until we meet again, dear friend, eternal love, Jim Eubanks

Grady was a gentleman, loving, kind and generous, the Lord gave him many qualities that we all loved and admired. He was a wonderful dad, granddad, brother in Christ and caring friend. The light of Christ's grace and love showed through him to all who knew him. He is with the Lord Jesus Christ in his heavenly home and he will be missed, but we know he has by God's grace, changed addresses. Steve and I will miss him as do all who knew him.

It's hard to believe that Grady has finally gone home. What a joyous time it must be for him to meet his Lord and Savior His soul is at peace. No more pain, no more loneliness, no more tears, and no more missing his beautiful wife, Mary Ann. Grady and Mary Ann ministered to me over many years showing me a great amount of love and care and generosity. I am thankful that God put me in their lives. They were salt and light! The hope that Jesus gives us is that one day (for those who die in Christ) we will see them again. Amen.
