of Maumelle, AR
July 8, 1946 - April 30, 2019
Robert Charles (Bob) Phelps passed away at home April 30, 2019. He was born July 8, 1946 in Arkadelphia, Arkansas to the late Paul and Jamie Phelps. Bob was a 1964 graduate of Arkadelphia High School and 1968 graduate of Ouachita Baptist University. He served in the U.S. Army on active duty in Stuttgart, Germany and continued his Service in the Reserves upon his return, achieving the rank of Captain. He worked as a District Sales Manager with Southern Farm Bureau Insurance until his retirement in 1999.
Bob spent his teen and young adult years boating on Lake DeGray, playing 60's folk music on the guitar and picking apples in Washington State. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing almost weekly until recent years. He was a founding member of the ''Thirteen Ponders'' at Maumelle Country Club and treasured the friendships he made there. Bob was fortunate to have traveled extensively with his family and dear friends and was at his happiest watching his grandsons play football.
Bob is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lane Deese Phelps; daughters, Ashley McNeely (Van) and Megan Granberry (Chris); 3 grandsons (Lane, Tucker & Dawson Granberry), 3 step-grandsons (Hunter Caples, Michael & Taylor McNeely); sister, Terri Van Houten, and a host of extended family. He was preceded in death by his beloved rescue lab, Barney.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, May 5th at 1:00 at First United Methodist Church of Maumelle, 1201 Edgewood Dr, Maumelle, AR followed by a Celebration of his Life at Maumelle Country Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Maumelle Friends of the Animals, P.O. Box 13061, Maumelle, AR 72113.
Lane & family,
So sorry that you have lost a husband, father & grandfather. Although I didn’t meet Bob until later in life, I quickly learned that he was a neat guy who loved to travel and loved being with family & friends (including his best friend Barney). The ‘Arkansas Travelers’ took Sandy & I under their wings & accepted us as one of their own while on an Alaskan Cruise (our first, their ‘umpteenth’). We went on another ‘memorial’ (for several reasons) cruise in Europe a year later and have made several trips to Maumelle in the succeeding years to visit. Even spent some time at Greers Ferry Lake during NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four in which only Lane successfully selected the winning team. Evidently, Bob enjoyed being with his ‘Army buddies’ who he spoke about often. Pleasant memories with lots of laughter and Bob will be missed by many including the Nolans from Texas.
Our thoughts & prayers are with you through this difficult time, sorry for your loss.
Lane, I am so sorry, you will be in my prayers! Love you, Billie Sur

Lane & Family,
I've know Bob my whole life. Growing up in Arkadelphia - every one knew you. Bob was one of the nicest guys I've know. Was so glad to be friends on Facebook so we could keep up with families. He was so proud of the grands.
Keeping all of the Phelps family in my Prayers. RIP my Friend
Fairly and I were deeply saddened to hear of Bob's passing. The Phelps have been our dear friends for over 50 years. We join with Bob's many other friends to offer our sincerest condolences to Lane, Ashley, Megan, and their children, and Bob's other family members during this most difficult time.
I am saddened to hear of Bob’s passing. He was one of a kind! I know that he will be dearly missed by all that knew and loved him. He took me in when I joined Maumelle Country Club and he introduced me to the 13 Ponders. He graduated with my aunt and I loved hearing stories from the past about my family and people and places that we knew in common. He was always a kind friend. I will miss him greatly! My condolences to the family.
