Guyla Wooton Berry

of Calico Rock, AR

September 23, 1915 - April 14, 2019

Guyla Lorraine Wooton Berry was born September 23, 1915 in Flippin, Arkansas. She died April 14, 2019 in Calico Rock, Arkansas at the age of 103.
She began life as Lillie Wooton '''' named after an aunt '''' but as a very young child decided herself that Guyla Lorraine suited her better. This hints at the unique approach to life that was Guyla's.
She was predeceased by her husband, Earl Berry; her parents, Edward and Elzada Burch Wooton; dear friends, Ruth and Steve Waldrop and Bessie Jo Lawrence Mears; her special cousin, Carmel Wooton; and her brothers and sisters-in-law, Victor and Ethel Berry, Guy and Kathleen Berry, Loyce and Maxine Berry, Raymond and Maude Johnson, and Blake and Billie Berry, all of whom she regarded as her own siblings.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in law, Carolyn and Richard Tucker and Sharon and Robert Lane, as well as six grandchildren: Lisa Tucker Kelly (whom she credited herself with naming) and her spouse Kevin; Richard Brent Tucker and his spouse Cindy; Beth Lane Knight and her spouse Jay (who kept Guyla supplied with hot coffee); Robert Kent Lane and Lorrie Belluomini; Robyn Jo Lane and her spouse Joe Agan; and Jonathan Tipton Berry Lane and his spouse Jill. She is survived by her 15 great-grandchildren Kolton Kelly (whom she also took credit for naming) and his spouse Roxie, Jack Kelly, Caroline Kelly, Christopher Kelly, Paxton Tucker, Nate Wilgus, Aidan Wilgus, Wyl Dennis, Molly Knight, Graham Knight, Jackson Parker, Mary Katherine Clark, Zach Agan, and Rye Agan.
Guyla was known for her strong presence and definite opinions. Even when her body was frail her spirit was strong. She was accomplished in many areas, from sports and creative endeavors to her career as a medical secretary, where she could correctly spell any medical jargon thrown at her. Guyla played high school basketball at Flippin and despite her diminutive stature was an excellent guard, even winning MVP status in tournament play. Flippin basketball and Coach Gatie Keeter were favorite topics of conversation in her later years. Her love of sports carried through to adulthood and she was a devoted Razorback fan, attending all football games in War Memorial Stadium from the days of Bowden Wyatt through Bobby Petrino's time '''' even attending into her late nineties. As an adult, she was a talented seamstress who made coats, bonnets, and legging sets for her young daughters and continued to sew less complicated but lovely articles for them throughout their lives. An active member of the Japonica Garden Club, Guyla won numerous blue ribbons for her floral arrangements. Guyla and Earl were known for their hospitality, making guests welcome and ensuring they were well-fed whether or not they were the least bit hungry. Moreover, she was known for her speed, whether on the basketball court or in front of her typewriter, but especially behind the wheel of any car she drove.
Her philosophy, unstated, but lived was ''Always do your best,'' and it showed in everything she did: playing basketball, sewing, arranging flowers, spelling, typing, keeping house, cooking, and taking care of loved ones. She believed that life is a gift and one should never whine or complain; that one must face adversity and deal with it; that self-pity is a waste and one should not succumb to it.
Guyla was blessed with the best possible parents and an especially wonderful husband. She had a much-loved and loving family and circle of friends throughout her long life. Although in her last several years she could neither see nor hear well, nor enjoy solid foods or walk on her own, she was able to establish relationships in her own inimitable way. She enjoyed the people around her always, and especially the nurses and staff at the Medical Center of Izard County who cared for her so compassionately.
She was Guyla Wooton Berry, and she liked hot coffee, warm blankets, and someone to hold her hand and listen while she talked basketball. To the end, she believed that life is good and you should always count your blessings.
