John Samuel ''Sam'' Smith, age 65 of Clinton, Arkansas passed from this life on Friday, April 5th, 2019 at Conway Regional Medical Center in Conway, Arkansas with family awaiting the outcome of his heart surgery. He was born in Augusta, Georgia on September 27th, 1953 to the late Lillie Faye ''Mama Susie'' Massey Smith and Jesse Smith.
Sam was a fun-loving guy who had many friends growing up in Leslie, Arkansas. He grew up with four brothers and two sisters, living a good life surrounded by aunts, uncles and cousins. He attended many family gatherings at Mama Susie's and at grandparents, Matt and Bertha Massey with many visits to Mull, Arkansas to Smith reunions at Grandma Smith's. Sam graduated from Leslie School in 1971. He was a member of Leslie First Baptist Church. He was a boiler maker by trade. Sam enjoyed the camaraderie that he shared with his fellow boilermakers. Just recently many of them gathered at Ozark Health hospital to support their fellow boilermaker. Sam married the love of his life, Mavis Balentine on June 30th, 1972. From this union was born Steven and Matt.
Sam is preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Lillie Faye Smith; two brothers, Dwight Douglas and David Charles Smith; and very special in-laws, Floyd and Joyce Balentine.
Left to cherish Sam's memory are his wife of 47 years, Mavis Smith; his children, Steven Smith and wife Sabrina and Matt Smith and wife Scarlet; grandchildren, Lydia, Sadie and Noah; brothers, Wesley, Wayne and Gordon; and sisters, Sandy, Paige and Patty. Sam was a character and we all loved him. Life will never be the same without him
Funeral services for Sam will be 2:00 PM Sunday, April 7th, 2019 at Roller-Coffman Funeral Home in Marshall, Arkansas with Bro. Faron Rogers officiating. Visitation will be 1:00 till 2:00 PM preceding the service. Burial will be in Leslie Cemetery. Bearers will be Wesley Smith, Wayne Smith, Gordon Smith, Wade Smith, Floyd Balentine and Robert Balentine.
