of Searcy, AR

September 14, 1932 - November 29, 2018

Earl Ellis Smith of Searcy, Arkansas, died late in the evening of November 29, 2018. He was at home in the caring company of his two youngest sons when he passed on to join his beloved wife of sixty-two years, Oletus Faye Smith.

Earl is survived by seven children: Samuel Earl Smith of Austin, Arkansas; Charles Raymond Smith of Roland, Arkansas; Alan Keith Smith of Little Rock, Arkansas; John Terry (Jack) Smith of McRae, Arkansas; Kenneth Ellis Smith of Searcy, Arkansas; Loré Ann (Smith) Tirado of Lusk, Wyoming; and Pamela Sue (Smith) Angerman of Searcy, Arkansas. Also surviving are thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Earl's three sisters-Bethel Balogac, Dorma Jean Potts, and Elsie Nakatsu - preceded him in passing.

On September 14, 1932, Earl was born in Chester, West Virginia, to Helen (Lyons) and Raymond O. Smith. After a childhood playing in the hills along the Ohio River, he set out to see the world as a teenager. In late 1951, while in Colorado, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He met a lovely young lady named Oletus Faye Hallford while on temporary duty in Tempe, Arizona. They were married on February 3, 1952. He went on to serve honorably for twenty-one years before retiring to Searcy, Arkansas in 1972 where he continued his education at Harding University.

Earl was a kind and humble Christian man who made it a mission to entertain and instruct (by both word and deed) his children, his grandchildren, and most of the neighborhood children for blocks around. He loved to sing ''those good old hymns'' with family and friends, and he had a fondness and a knack for the English language. He spent many happy hours working cross-word puzzles and writing his award-winning poems-some humorous, some inspirational, but all of them honest, insightful, and wise. He had a true passion for words and, even more, for the Word, reading and studying his Bible daily. Forty-five years a member of the Four Mile Hill Church of Christ, Earl was ever-charitable in thought and ever-generous in action-always eager to help a soul in need, and he only ever asked one thing in return: ''Now go do something good for someone else.'' May we all honor him in answering that call.

A Graveside service will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at Honey Hill Cemetery in Searcy under the direction of Roller-Daniel Funeral Home.
