Earl "E.G." G. Howard

of Jonesboro, AR

April 30, 1927 - December 5, 2008

Earl G. ''E.G.'' Howard, Jr. of Jonesboro was embraced by Angels on Friday, December 5, 2008, after a brief illness. He was 81 years of age.

He was born in Pitts on April 30, 1927 to the late Earl George and Ethel Bryant Howard. He was a farmer, employed at Riceland Foods for 36 years. He was owner of the Culberhouse Car Wash, and numerous rental apartments in Jonesboro.

He was a grandson of John Howard, a justice of the peace of Dobson Township in Poinsett County, Arkansas that gave the community of Uno its name. The Howards were one of the pioneer families and they help with some of the first rice harvesting in the Long Creek Community of Poinsett County.

After graduating from Grubbs High School in 1943 and attending Arkansas State College, Earl joined the Navy in 1945 and served on LST 451 with a rating of Fireman First Class in the South Pacific during World War II.

In 1948 Earl began working at Riceland Foods at Weiner. Earl moved to Jonesboro in 1955 with family where he continued to work at Riceland Foods until 1984.

Earl married Kathryn O'Neal McManners in 1951. He was married to Kathryn until she passed away in 2005 after 54 years as a loving couple.

He married the former Mabel Woodruff Blagg in 2006.

Earl was active in community service and a member of the Chamber of Commerce, a long time member of the Civitan Club of Jonesboro, past president of the United Commercial Travelers of Arkansas, on the Abilities Unlimited board of directors, Clark Cemetery Board, the American Legion, a Gideon, LST Association of America and Ancient Mystic order of Bagmen of Bagdad.

He was a Christian in the arms of God as he attended and supported Highland Drive Baptist Church.

Earl loved sports and was a gospel music fan for almost 60 years and was a loving brother, husband, dad, papaw and friend. He will be greatly missed.

In later years, Earl enjoyed keeping up with his great grandchildren and organizing his LST ship reunion which met in Branson every September.

Earl was particularly devoted to his family. Survivors include his wife, Mabel Blagg Howard of the home, one daughter and son-in-law; Teressa A. and W. Danny Honnoll, one sister, Myrth Hibbard of Jonesboro; two granddaughters, Lisa M. Silas and her husband Ashton and Leah M. Honnoll all of Jonesboro. He leaves two great grandchildren, William D. Silas and Emily Kathryn Silas both of Jonesboro.

He is preceded in death by his parents Earl and Ethel Howard, one brother Lee Howard, his first wife, Kathryn, one great granddaughter, Zoe Honnoll.

A celebration of his life will be held Monday, December 8, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at the Roller-Farmers Union Chapel in Jonesboro with Rev. Johnny Hutchison officiating. Teressa and all of Earl's family:
You already know how much we loved Earl and Kathryn, they were two of the most special people we have had the priviledge of calling friends. But they were much more than friends, they were like family, as are all of you. We had so many good times together and have so many wonderful memories, especially the 18 years of going to Branson together. They will never be forgotten by "the Branson Bunch". We miss them terribly, but know that someday we will have a glorious reunion. Our love to you all.

We knew Earl for many years and appreciated him for his kindness and always doing a nice deed for someone. When Jerry was superintendent, the residents at the Jonesboro Human Development Center benefited much from his gifts of time and money. Our prayers are with the family.

I had the chance to meet Mr. Howard when I first purchased his carwash. We talked and met several times and not once did our conversations focus just on the business itself but more often then not about life, family, and the way of the world. He was without a doubt one of the most sincere and genuinely nice people that I have ever encountered. Thoughts and Prayers from our family.

A real loss. First knew Earl when we both started with 55/Alive Driving program as instructors. Good person all the way around. And believe me when I say that LST sailors got to be tough. Earl earned his pass into Heaven and will be waiting for the rest of us when we arrive to show us around.

I grew up hearing about Mr. E..G. My parents were Eugene and Grace Mitchell. They always thought a lot of Mr. E.G. and respected his friendship and opinions. He was a loyal servant to the Clark Cemetary Board, working countless years, for which I am grateful. God Bless all his family. Marsha and Don Lewellyn

I first became friends with Mr. Howard while working at Riceland. He was such a fabulous person and true friend. He always had a smile and he always made it a point to come to my desk, when he would come by the Jonesboro Housing Authority, and ask about me and my family. He was a devoted family man and loved his family very much. I know he is in heaven now with his first lovely wife and I know he is at peace and is not suffering any more. I truly loved Mr. Howard and will forever remember his friendship. I pray for peace and understanding to all of his family.

Mr. Howard was a special and loving man who chould always make a person laugh. He visited me while I was in the hospital and while he was there, he wept. He was a great friend to my father and mother. He always had a soft voice and a kind smile and always had a ear for listening to anyones needs. We will greatly miss Mr. Howard.
