To a great friend that I will miss dearly. Gave me so much advice and insight on life and problems that he made seem small. I will miss his friendship and advice that kept me straight and positive. Rest in peace buddy.

I always enjoyed being around Judge Yates, whether in the courtroom as an attorney or as a presiding judge. As his successor in office, there was never a time he used his position to try to gain an advantage. He was a gentlemen, a fair and impartial judge and a good man. I will miss him.

Harvey and I are first cousins and are only 3 months difference in age. We both grew up near Fallsville, Arkansas, attended Oark High School in 1965. We also both attended the University of Arkansas with degrees in Accounting. He advanced to Law School and i got drafted.

Harvey was not only my cousin but also my best and closest friends. We fished and camped on the upper Buffalo River, Hauled Hay and picked tomatoes together and enjoyed every minute of it. Also have great memories of getting to be with him at "Deer" camp in Madison County during the 80's.

We haven' t been able to be together much since the 80's but i sure have a lot of great memories with him and i will treasure them forever.

Best wishes to Stacey, Barbara, Jack and Family.

Peggy and I wish to send our Prayers and Sympathy to the Yates Family. I had the Honor and privilige to work with Judge Yates during his years of service as Municipal Judge in West Helena and always deeply respected his legal knowledge; His commitment to Public Service; and His Professional and Courteous Guidance in many situations.
We hope that Your Faith, and a Lifetime of Cherished Memories will comfort Each of You in this time of Grief. We may not be able to be with you in person, but know that we are with you in our Hearts, and our Prayers. Tom & Peggy Cross

Sad to hear about the passing of my cousin, Harvey Lee. Although we did not see each other very often, I always knew he was my cousin. Enjoyed when he came to the Freewill Decoration to visit with old friends and family. I am the son of Ellis Yates, uncle of his father Harvey. Condolences to the family.

This office will truly miss Judge Yates. As you can see we still consider him our Judge. He was a very compassionate person. He would not come to this courthouse and not come in the speak to us. He was our friend and we knew it. Stacy, you and the family have our sincere condolences and we will continue to keep you in our prayers.

My mother was Ova (Friend) Samuels, and my father was Everett Samuels of Red Star. When my mother was young, Harvey's mother, Esther Combs, was her best friend. Mom never forgot Esther and spoke often of her. I am actually slightly related to Esther and her family through my father. I believe it is through his mother, who was one of Jackson Ward's daughters. I never had the privilege of knowing Harvey, but offer my warmest condolences to his loved ones and friends.

A long time ago - he came down from the hills, Now - way too early, way too soon, way too quick to say goodbye.
A good friend of ours for almost 50 years. Many cases, conversations, lunches, and times of laughter and sadness. A well liked Judge, lawyer and friend to many. Harvey will be sorely missed by his family, friends, colleagues and the community. It won’t be the same.

It was an honor and privilege to practice in front of Judge Yates. His calm, gravelly drawl disguised a keen intellect and a perfect sense of fairness. The current circumstances make it difficult to convey to Stacy and Judge Yates’ children just how respected he was. At any other time there wouldn’t be a venue in Helena big enough to hold all of Judge Yates’ admirers.

Favorite Judge Yates story: Immediately following closing arguments in a particularly contentious trial, I suddenly found myself engaged in a shoving match with defense counsel (who shall remain nameless) while the jury paused in amazement on their way to the jury room. As we were poised to start throwing fists, Judge Yates banged his gavel and said in a completely calm, almost lazy, tone of voice: “Now, I don’t care if you boys fight, but you’re gonna do it out there in the parking lot and not in my courtroom in front of the jury.”

Fight over. .
