John ''Schooner'' M. Hughes, Sr., age 74, of Lavaca, Arkansas passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2019 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Mr. Hughes was born July 30, 1944 in Paris, Arkansas to the late Sam and Ola Mae Hughes. He loved car racing, the Arkansas Razorbacks and his family.
He is survived by his wife, Janis; son, John Hughes, Jr. (Jennifer) of Batesville; grandson, Jackson Hughes; stepchildren, Pam Taylor and Mark Freeman; step-granddaughter, Katy; four nieces and one nephew.
Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Sammy Joe Hughes; step-siblings, Billy Hughes and Helen Wagner; and niece, Kathy Hughes.
A funeral service for John ''Schooner'' Hughes will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home. Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park in West Helena. Dr. J.E. Hughes will officiate.
Pallbearers are Danny Dillinger, Eddie Bo Miller, Bubba Hughes, Bobby Bennett, Gery Cravens, Logan Miller and Jordan Masden.
Services will be directed by Roller-Citizens Funeral Home, West Helena, (870) 572-2571.
