Lucille Grinder

of Gravel Ridge, AR

May 26, 1925 - December 31, 2019

Lucille Grinder (Collier), 94, of Gravel Ridge, AR. Passed peacefully on Tuesday, December 31, 2019. Lucille was born on May 26, 1925 in Hog Holler, KY.

Her father, Solomon ''Sod'' Collier, and mother, Ida Mae (Tolliver), moved the family to Silver Hill, AR. They settled the last homestead available from the Homestead Act of 1862 along the Buffalo River. Collier's Homestead is now protected and maintained by the Buffalo National Park Service. Lucille was extremely proud of her father. He was a solid, stout man that wasn't afraid to stand up for what he believed in. After standing up to the roughest and toughest men at the Buffalo, he was made a deputy for the county. That attitude carried over to her in her advocacy for children. As a child, she loved to run the hills herding cows and throwing rocks on the cliffs surrounding the Buffalo. She knew all the spots to quench her thirst with pure cold mountain spring water. She spent some nights hunting opossums with her brother Junior. Springs were spent picking strawberries to earn money for shoes and bolts of cloth to make dresses.

Her love of family took her to Arizona so George could see his daughter as he trained for WWII. She would walk many blocks carrying her daughter, Georgia, to save her money for other ''more important'' things. They then came back to Arkansas to raise a family. She was affectionately called ''Maw'' by most friends and family. Her handstitched quilts, blue jean quilts for camping, and crocheted table settings, ornaments, and pot holders are prized possessions.

She also loved spoiling her pets, gardening, painting, hunting, canning, and sharing her knowledge of skills gained in life. She was an avid rock hound since her days at the Buffalo and loved to show her collection to everyone. She was well known for her famous parker house rolls, cookies, and meringue pies. Thanksgiving at Maw's house was a feast with a house full of family, love, and laughter. She enjoyed nothing better than sitting on her back porch, built by her loving son, Jim, and having an ice cold Busch while passing the time entertaining us with her superb story-telling.

You never left Maw's house empty handed. She spent many hours cooking and gathering things for her loved ones to leave with like pecans, cookies, seeds, and vegetables from her well-loved gardens. Her daughter, Georgia, loved to take her traveling to see her extended family like the Tollivers. Her boys were happy and willing to do anything at all for her. They took care of her the way she took care of them. She treasured her family above all else. Lucille was a strong, loving, talented, and accomplished woman. She will be missed by all that knew her.

Lucille met her lifelong love of 70 years, George Grinder, who preceded her in death along with 3 of her 5 children, Georgia M. (Skip) Grinder, Danny W. (Nancy) Grinder, and Jerry L. (Helen) Grinder.

She is survived by her sons, James R. Grinder and Dale W. (Kathy) Grinder, 10 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A Graveside Service will be held at1:00 PM, Sunday, January 5, 2020 at Silver Hill Cemetery near St. Joe. Visitation will be held from 1:00-3:00 PM, Saturday, January 4, 2020 at Roller-Owens Funeral Home, 5509 John F. Kennedy Blvd, North Little Rock, AR 72116.
