Clay "Bubba" Cordell Herr

of Memphis, TN

September 12, 1955 - May 31, 2019

Clay Cordell Herr ''Bubba'', of Memphis, TN was born on September 12, 1955 to Joseph Edward Herr and Ruby Mae Cordell Herr. He died on Friday, May 31, 2019 at Baptist Memorial Hospital after a battle with cancer.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00a.m., Monday, June 3, 2019 at the Roller-Citizens Funeral Home, 20 Pine Street, West Memphis, AR, 72301 with Father Charles Thessing and Reverend Roger Shock presiding. Visitation will be from 5:00p.m. 7:00p.m. on Sunday, June 2, 2019 at Roller- Citizens Funeral Home.

Clay was preceded in death by his mother and father and his step-son Shawn Kennedy, and dozens of good dogs that will be waiting for him at the gates of heaven. Clay is survived by his wife, Jill, and their two dogs Little Bear and Bob, his son Niles Herr (Kara) , his daughter, Katie Herr, his sister Becky (Wayne) Trusler; sister, Brenda Darr, grandchildren Griffin Herr and Alana Herr, and many nieces and nephews. He enjoyed a special relationship with his niece Lindy (Scott) Jones.

If you are wondering if you may have ever met him, you didn't, because if you met him you WOULD remember. He was world renowned for not holding back and telling it like it is. Clay was a great orator and story teller and always had something to say and often it was something inappropriate. He was highly intelligent and if he told you something there was no need to Goggle it. It was true. He attended Catholic schools and put up a good fight with many a nun. Clay had a fondness for authority (his own) and this fondness followed him throughout his life which led to many interesting episodes and stories.
He graduated from Arkansas State University with a degree in Music. His professional life was varied and expansive and he excelled at all he pursued, from making a living as a concert drummer and session musician at Ardent Studios in his early years, to owning several car dealerships in Little Rock, AR, to a vacation rental business in Seaside, Florida, His last adventure was rice farming in Hazen, AR which brought him great joy and many friends.

He was and Eagle Scout and an was an accomplished outdoorsman and hunter, a lover of people, animals and underdogs. He was always concerned about others and making sure they were having a good time. Clay loved a good bourbon and a good party and knew how to bring a smile to anyone's face with his quick wit and sarcasm. He made people feel like they mattered, whether it was his friends, his co-workers, the medical staff that cared for him or the clerk that sold him cigarettes at 7-11.

Clay did not lose his battle with cancer. When Clay left this world, cancer died, but Clay's gonna live forever in Heaven, so technically Clay won. Memorials may be sent to Hope Church Samaritan's Fund, Memphis, TN, West Memphis Animal Shelter or a charity of your choice

Bubba and I went to school together. Class of ‘73. He was in the cool crowd. I worked. I still consider him as a friend because it didn’t matter to him who you were. He always treated every the same. With respect!! We were friends later in life, on Facebook. His Witt always shown through. I will miss that Witt.
So sorry to see a good man go! Prayers for you, his family. Remember him with a warm heart and a sincere admiration for his caring and humor.

So sad to hear of Clay’s passing. I always enjoyed “tagging along” with Bart when we would go to y’all’s house. Clay never made me feel like the “kid brother” of his friend. He will be missed.
Beautiful Obituary.
