Donald James (Jimmy) Black, 86, passed away peacefully on November 24, 2018 at his home in Marion, AR with his children by his side.

Born in Taunton, MA on April 13, 1932, he was the youngest of 9 children born to William and Helen (Currie) Black.

Jimmy grew up and was educated in Taunton, MA. He became friends with greyhound owners and trainers that boarded in his family's home and when he was just 7 years old, he was hired to haul paper and trash, pick up feed pans and clean the pens of the greyhounds. He then worked with his older brother, Billy, as a helper and then trainer. After serving 2 years in the US Navy, he returned and worked as a trainer for FB (Happy) Stutz and Fred Whitehead for 9 years before purchasing his own kennel in 1963. He handled kennels throughout the country, racing in over 15 tracks. He, along with his father, William and brothers, Billy and Bobby, were inducted into the pioneer section of the Greyhound Hall of Fame.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Helen Black, his brothers, William (Billy) and Robert (Bobby) Black, his sisters, Dorothy Nason, Ruth Stafford, Helen Parenteau and Beverly Williams.

He is survived by his daughters, Debra Shivers and Cathy (Jerry) White, both of Marion, AR , his sons, Clay Black of Farragut, IA and Ted (Jennifer) Black of Jackson, MS. A brother George (Chris) Black of Quincy, IL and sister Rose Gould of Dunnelon, FL, along with 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held. Memorials may be given to Midsouth Greyhound Adoption Options, Inc. 2000 Southland Dr #23, West Memphis, AR 72301 or Hope for the Holidays, Marion United Methodist Church 81 E Military Rd. ,Marion, AR 72364 or charity of your choice.
