of Welcome Home, AR

June 26, 1924 - March 30, 2020

Dewey Wayne Ward, age 95 of Welcome Home, Arkansas passed from this life on Monday, March 30th, 2020 at Highland Court in Marshall, Arkansas. He was born in Watts, Arkansas on June 26th, 1924 to Isaac Claude Ward and Vertner Ragland Ward.

Dewey was a charter member of the Welcome Home church where he served as an elder. Dewey loved to garden and he spent many happy years working in the garden alongside his wife Juanita. They ran the family together also. In earlier years Dewey worked in the timber industry. He enjoyed having cookouts with family and friends on the banks of Red River. Dewey liked to keep the road that ran in front of his home clean of debris and trash. A hobby his neighbors greatly enjoyed. His strength and strong presence will be missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Beth Ragland of Welcome Home and Gail (Roy) Ragland of Welcome Home; one son, Jerry Wayne Ward of Welcome Home; grandchildren, Michael (Sherry) Ragland, Dian (Dale) King, Brian (Reanna) Ragland, Kelly (Nikki) Small, Kim (Andy) Treat, Julie Ward, Jenny (Josh) Gray, Benny (Shaleena) Ward, Hannah Ward and Jeremy (Laura) Ragland; twenty-five great-grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; son-in-law, Carroll Small; and many other family and friends who will also mourn his passing.

Dewey is preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Vertner Ward; his wife of 73 years, Juanita Ward who passed away in 2016; one daughter, Shirley Small; son-in-law, Harold Ragland; and siblings, Clell Ward, Gertrude Beavers, Pauline Thompson, Aline Crow and infant brother, Harrison Ward.

Private family graveside services will be held at Chinquapin Cemetery near Welcome Home on Thursday, April 2nd, 2020 with Bro. Andy Treat officiating. Bearers will be Michael Ragland, Brian Ragland, Kelly Small, Benny Ward, Jeremy Ragland, Macy Brown and Zaac Ragland. The family would like to invite everyone to sign the online guestbook for Dewey at www.rollerfuneralhomes.com/marshall. During these trying and difficult times with the family's permission we are not posting service times on our website in order to limit public gatherings and to do our part to stop the spread of the Coronavirus. Please contact the family for exact times. We apologize for any inconvenience.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Chinquapin Cemetery Fund c/o Gail Ragland, 20024 S. Hwy 27, Marshall, AR 72650.

Dave and I send our sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Ward. His years of service to the Welcome Home Church have made an eternal difference in the lives of many. How wonderful to read that he kept the road in front of his home clean! (I like to pick up trash, too. It’s great exercise.) Last year, it was my pleasure to interact with Mr. Ward at the nursing home. He was a true gentleman and will be missed.

I have such good memories of Dewey, and Juanita - I can't really think of one without the other - and feel privileged to have known and loved him. He had a quiet soul, never wanted the limelight, and could be counted on for good advice when consulted. He loved his family and wanted the best for each them. I'll miss him. I pray that his family will find comfort and peace from their memories. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
