of Marshall, AR
January 13, 1928 - September 13, 2019
Bettie Jane Battershell Nix, age 91 of Marshall, Arkansas passed from this life on Friday, September 13th, 2019 at Highland Court in Marshall, Arkansas. She was born in Marshall, Arkansas on January 13th, 1928 to Tom Battershell and Vada Lindsey Battershell.
As a child growing up, Bettie attended church at Canaan and then became a member of the First Baptist Church of Marshall. Being widowed at 26 with a six year old child was a very difficult situation for a young mother. Bettie faced this by going to work and that set the pattern of her life until she entered the nursing home at Highland Court. Bettie worked for Jack Treece Butane and Cable Company as a general manager and bookkeeper. All the men who worked there called her the boss and she for sure gave all the orders. Bettie also had a Grade A dairy and beef cattle operation that she owned and ran with George and Bennie Treat. They got to the dairy barn by 4:00 AM, then went to work at Treece Butane until 4:30 PM, milked again that afternoon and then fed their beef cattle. She loved her cattle and checking on them. All of that made her so happy, she loved her life; work was her main hobby. Bettie loved gardening. She usually had a one acre garden, a two acre garden and four large freezers. She also loved yard work, believe it or not! Bettie enjoyed cooking and feeding people. She loved giving orders and you better follow them or face the consequences. But most of all she loved her family. She and Bennie only spent two days apart their entire lives until Bennie passed away at the age of 88 years. We are going to miss you mother-Mama Bet.
Survivors include her daughter, Sammie Horton and husband Terry of Southlake, TX; grandchildren, Ashlee (Robert) Horton of Argyle, TX and Trent (Carol) Horton of Southlake, TX; great-grandchildren, Braden Hinkle, Trevor Horton, Ella Horton and Lily Horton, all of Southlake, TX; and niece, Leslee Falls of Leeds England. Bettie is also survived by a very special friend whom she loved dearly, Kathy Adams. Kathy was so wonderful to care for her and love her until the very end.
Bettie is preceded in death by her husband, Billy Joe Nix who died in 1954; her parents, Tom and Vada Battershell; brother, H.G. Battershell; sisters, Jimmie Lee Falls and her beloved twin, Bennie Jean Treat; brothers-in-law, George Treat and Russell Falls; and nephew, Tom Falls.
Funeral services for Bettie will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, September 18th, 2019 at Roller-Coffman Funeral Home in Marshall, Arkansas with Bro. Shirl Williams officiating. Visitation will be 12:00 till 1:00 PM preceding the service. Burial will be in Canaan Cemetery. Bearers will be Trent Horton, Braden Hinkle, Trevor Horton, Tom Harris, James Tilley and Johnny Neal. Honorary bearers will be Robert Crawford and Timmy Massey. In lieu of flowers at the family's request donations may be made to Searcy County Veterans Memorial Association, 108 Noah Horton Memorial Drive, Marshall, AR 72650.

Everyone will miss Bettie Jane for she was one of the nicest ladies to ever be around. I enjoyed all the Battershell family as I was growing up in Marshall. H.G. was a teacher and a High School Principal while I was in school. He accompanied our Senior Trip to Washington, D.C. and was a fantastic teacher. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family as they deal with the loss of their loved one. Take care!
