I had a deep respect for Mr. Holder. He seemed gruff and scary but he was really a big ole soft teddy bear. Even though I hadn't seen him since '82 I will miss him like I do Mr. Moore. I hope Mr. Holders family can find some peace just knowing how many students lives he touched over the years. Rest in peace Mr. Holder, you deserve it.

Dee and family,
You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I will always remember Spence. I had not seen him for quite a few years and I saw Spence & Dee at the Alumni Banquet. I was really impressed that after all these years and all the kids he has known over his life time that he called me by name and asked how I had been doing and that he was proud of the accomplishments I had been having at work. He was a true inspiration to the many kids he helped to shape during his life time loving and caring for kids. He will be missed.

1943-2010
At my sister Sue's funeral the minister used this analogy: The year we were born and the year we die are not nearly as important as how we lived "the dash." The comments of Spence's friends, co-workers and former students clearly show that he lived a wonderful life in which he nurtured others and that he has left a rich legacy. He truly filled the dash with wonderful memories from everyone, plus a sadness as he has left behind those who cared for him most.

My thoughts and prayers are with you..

Dee and Family -- Spence was a very special person to me., not just as a boss, but as a friend. He was the first NASDPTS President I served under and he gave me the best education possible on how the be a good Executive Director for the association. He explained the "ins and outs" of pupil transportation at the state and local level -- lessons I never forgot. He was the best possible mentor anyone could have.

His sense of humor was second to no one. My fondest "Spense Moment" was when he explained how politics and elections work in Arkansas -- I sure learned something that day.

Spence will be dearly missed, but there is no doubt his legacy in terms of the improvements he championed in pupil transportation will live on forever.

Dee and family, Having just returned from the Southeastern States Pupil Transportation Conference (SESPTC), Spence has been on my mind. He was a fixture at these events and it just didn't seem the same without Dee and Spence. I have such fond memories of Spence, especially during our tenure with NASDPTS. In fact, the "dead mule" plaque given to Spence in recognition of his ability to put an issue to rest, was created in Virginia. We had many good laughs over this. Spence was a mentor to me at a time when I was struggling with my identity in pupil transportation. Following in the footsteps of Buster Bynum and becoming known as "Buster Jr." I was able to move into my own with Spence's guidance. I am just so very, very sad at this moment, but at the same time, so very, very happy that I had the opportunity to know Spence and Dee personally and professionally. With deep and heartfelt regards

Dear Ms Holder and Family,
It is with great sadness that I write to express my deepest sympathy for your loss. I had the pleasure of spending time with Spence on numerous occasions over the years and always enjoyed the opportunity talk and laugh with him. Among my favorite memories is the "banquet" he created and hosted in the Spring of 2000 at a tiny little barbecue joint in Warrensburg, MO where he presented me - in front of a crowd of people from all over the country - with a framed $1 bill to show his support for Hillary Clinton's campaign to be a Senator from NY. To this day, I keep it on my desk; it is one of my favorite and most valuable possessions. I think of Spence every day because of it.
I hope you find comfort in the knowledge that Spence made the world a better place for me and for many others. We will fondly remember him and will continue to pray for his everlasting life.
May God bless you and your family in the time ahead.
