Betty Rentja Stout

of Little Rock, AR

September 1, 1926 - August 9, 2019

Betty Rentja Stout, 92, of Little Rock, Arkansas, went on to be with The Lord on August 9, 2019. She was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, on September 1, 1926, to Frank and Rose Rentja. She attended Villa Maria College, and the University of Pittsburgh; both in Erie, Pennsylvania…where she obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree, and did some graduate work.

She moved with her family to Miami, Florida in 1952, where she met her future husband, J.D., who was attending the University of Miami, in Coral Gables, Florida…and they were married on December 20, 1952. They moved to the suburb of Hialeah, where they had, and raised their 2 sons, Daryl and Dana…truly, a setup from ''Leave It To Beaver'' with the entire family.

She was a school teacher until her retirement…first doing substitute teaching, then teaching chemistry and biology in the schools. She taught first in the Miami-Dade County Florida School District…then in the Little Rock Arkansas School District, after J.D.'s job transferred the family from south Florida to Little Rock, Arkansas, in August, 1977.

After her and J.D.'s retirement, they went on several ocean cruises all over the world; plus making several trips to visit family, with return trips to visit friends in south Florida. They also got into the wonderful hobby of square dancing. Their son, Daryl, got involved with it shortly after they did, and he is still involved, doing work with the Arkansas State Square Dance Federation.

After J.D.'s death in 2007, she and Daryl traveled together by Amtrak train to some of the conventions for the Clive Cussler Collectors Society…specifically, in Denver, Colorado in 2008…In San Diego, California in 2009…and in Scottsdale, Arizona in 2010…the latter where she was presented a beautiful photo of her and Clive Cussler (Daryl took the photo at the 2009 event…and member Tom Gwinn prepared a huge photo), to be signed by Clive himself, and all in attendance that year. She dearly treasured that photo, and had all of his books (which she had read and loved); plus, she was known to the group as ''Grandma Betty''. She had also done crocheting and bread making, and gave beads out at the conventions that her and Daryl attended.

She was grateful for her family, and all of her friends with the Clive Cussler Collectors Society…with square dancing…and with Geyer Springs United Methodist Church in Little Rock; and especially with church members, Hazel Wilson and her late husband, Lloyd, who she and her late husband, J.D., had met through square dancing…and who were Daryl's employer for 18 years.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Frank Jacob Rentja, and Rose Becker Rentja…her brother, Frank Rentja…her husband of 54 years, J.D. Stout, and a daughter-in-law, Janice Elaine Harvey Stout. She is survived by her two sons: Daryl J.D. Stout, and Dana Matthew Stout both of Little Rock, Arkansas…two nieces, Nan Carlson (with her husband, Denny), of Erie, Pennsylvania…Rhonda Williams Smith (with her husband, Richard) of Nashville, Tennessee…a brother-in-law and sister-in -law, Bruce and Helen Williams of Nashville, Tennessee…and a whole host of other family members and friends…including friends from square dancing, the Clive Cussler Collectors Society, and Geyer Springs United Methodist Church.

The family will receive visitors and friends on Wednesday, August 21 from 6pm to 8pm, at Roller Drummond Funeral Home, 10900 Interstate 30, in Little Rock. A Memorial Service, celebrating her life will be held there on Thursday, August 22, at 12 noon, with Director Darran Kea officiating. Private Burial will follow at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery in Sherwood, Arkansas, where she will be buried alongside her late husband of 54 years, J.D. Stout. Her 2 sons, Daryl and Dana, are grateful and thankful to have had such wonderful parents to raise them.

The family wishes to thank everyone for their support, thoughts, and prayers during this difficult time. Special thanks to Doctor Scott Brown and his staff at Saint Vincent Midtown Clinic…plus Saint Vincent Infirmary…Heart Clinic Arkansas…Colonel Glenn Health and Rehab, Hospice Care of Arkansas (all in Little Rock), and especially to all at Barnes Health Care in Lonoke, for their care in her final days, She's now with her husband, J,D., once again, and is no longer suffering.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be made in her name to the Food Pantry Ministry, at Geyer Springs United Methodist Church, 5500 Geyer Springs Road, in Little Rock, Arkansas, 72209.

Deepest condolences Daryl and Dana on the loss of your mother. Losing a parent or a child is probably one of the most difficult things we go through, but as Christians, we can be comforted in knowing that we will see them again when the Lord comes back for all of His children. So, while we may miss them, do not despair and do not give up hope. Keep them in remembrance as then watch over you from on high where there is no more suffering or pain.

I am sorry to hear about the passing of Betty. While I didn't know her personally, I do know her son Daryl. He son has qualities that I believe all parents would hope to instil upon their children. He is a man of good character and has a strong moral compass due to her loving care.

Even though her passing was expected the hole that is left in the lives of those who loved her will remain.

Whenever someone close to me passes, two things come to mind. The first is from Matthew 25:21 which helps to give me comfort knowing that our loved ones are no longer in pain and are finally in the presence of our Lord- His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Matthew 25:21

The other is the words of the Hymn Amazing Grace written by John Newton -

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we first begun.

Until that time when you see Betty once again, take comfort in knowing she is finally home.

Jeff
