Lalla Lee Ostergren

of Dennard, AR

May 6, 1924 - March 29, 2019

Lalla Lee Ostergren, age 94 of Dennard, Arkansas, went in search of a better garden, Friday, March 29, 2019, at her home of 44 years. She was born in rural Randolph County, Arkansas on May 6, 1924, to David Crockets Stevens and Mary Emmaline (Davis) Stevens.

She was a real ''Rosie The Riveter'' during WWII, serving as a plumber's assistant and welder on battleships in California, as a driver for an Army Major in Washington and assembled munitions in St. Louis.

She married March 21, 1944 in Oakland, California, to Richard Henry Ostergren, and eventually moved back to her beloved Arkansas in 1974 to live a back to the earth lifestyle. She earned an honorary doctorate from the Institute of Alternative Medicine and spoke on that subject, and organic gardening, regularly in public gatherings. She published two books and wrote a gardening column for years.

She is survived by sons David Gustaf of Dennard and Steven Henry, and wife Camille, of Maumelle, Arkansas.

Lalla is preceded by her husband of 68 years, her father and mother, and siblings Barbara, Flora, Bessie, Lily, Frank, Clarence and Lena.

A service of celebration and remembrance is being held Tuesday, April 2, at 1:30p.m. in the Roller-McNutt funeral Home, Clinton, Arkansas. Her remains will be laid to rest, next to her husband's, in Salem Cemetery, Dennard.

We are sorry for your loss and sorry we could not be there for the service. I am the youngest son of Barbara Stevens Slayton. Aunt Lalla could always help me, when I called her about an ailment or garden advice. Even though, we did not see her often, we knew she was there. It has been good for Jeffry Burgess, her caregiver, to keep us updated on her. We want to thank him for that.
