of Little Rock, AR

August 21, 1930 - April 21, 2019

Howard Lynn ''H.L.'' Mitchell, 88, of Little Rock, went to be with the Lord April 21, 2019. Howard was born on August 21, 1930 in Milan, Tennessee to Thomas and Sarah Morris Mitchell. A devoted husband and father, he was married to Barbara Anne Barksdale Mitchell of Trenton, Tennessee and Little Rock, for sixty-seven years.

Howard graduated from Milan High School in Milan, Tennessee and The University of Tennessee Martin. In his lifetime, Mr. Mitchell worked for the United States Department of Agriculture, as a Special Agent for the Missouri Pacific Railroad, as a Railway Services contractor, and in the transportation industry. Howard was a 32nd Degree Freemason, a member of the Scottish Rite Freemasons, Scimitar Shrine Temple, and Euclid Lodge #130 F&AM in Stuttgart.

Howard is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother John Thomas ''J.T.'' Mitchell of Milan, Tennessee.

He is survived by his loving wife; Anne, his daughter Amelia Anne Mitchell of Little Rock, and three sons, John Michael Mitchell of Bryant, Patrick Lynn Mitchell of Dallas, Texas and David Matthew Mitchell of North Little Rock.

As well, he is survived by four grandchildren: his granddaughter, Lisa Nicole Mitchell of Little Rock and three grandsons Michael Lynn Mitchell (Sarah Jo) of Bryant, Matthew Mitchell of Casscoe, and Andrew Logan Mitchell (Molly Katlyn) of Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Howard is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Anna Claire Mitchell, Reid Walker Mitchell, Libby Caroline Mitchell and Grant Thomas Mitchell of Bryant, and Olive Ella Henthorn of Little Rock.

Howard was an avid outdoorsman, adventurer, cattle farmer and horseman. He was a huntsman, a member of the American Coon Hunters Association, and loved well-trained dogs. He will be remembered for his work ethic, his sense of humor and, above all, an abiding love for and pride in his family.

A memorial celebration of his life is being organized and will be announced in the coming days.

My thoughts are with your family & I'm sorry for your loss. I have found memories of what a character Mr. Mitchell was...he was a man's man & he enjoyed poking fun at me & razzing me when I came to the house back in my high school days to meet up with Pat...now that I'm much older, I can appreciate that a lot more than I did back then...perspective. They just don't make 'em like Mr. Mitchell any more these days.
