Alva Vernon MathewsI am a Veteran.

of Little Rock, AR

October 10, 1924 - November 10, 2018

Alva Vernon Mathews, age 94, died November 10, 2018, in Little Rock after falling and breaking his hip. He was born and raised in Little Rock, attended Little Rock High School, was a WWII veteran, and worked at the Arkansas Gazette for 38 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his only sister; and his wife of 70 years, Ida Grace Watson Mathews. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Michael Barrier of Little Rock; his sisters-in-law Betty Chambers of Waxahachie, Texas, and Johnnie McDowell and Lois Madonia of Little Rock; and a loving host of nieces and nephews.

While still living at home, he loved to garden and travel, and was a long-time member of Tyler Street Baptist Church. He lived his last three years happily at Presbyterian Village. The family thanks the administrative staff, loving caregivers, and residents for the support and affection they shared with him. He loved the many activities offered including bingo, hymn singing, gardening, and sitting on the front row for the Sunday morning service in the chapel.

A memorial service celebrating Vernon's life will be held at 10 am Friday, November 23, in the chapel at Presbyterian Village, 510 North Brookside Drive, Little Rock 72205, with Presbyterian Village Chaplain Stacey Hammons and Rev. Don Cooper officiating. The family will receive family and friends immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial gift to Presbyterian Village at the address above or to a charity of your choice.

Shortly after Tyler Street Baptist Church disbanded Vernon joined us at Woodlawn, and though health issues soon prevented his attending regularly he always had a smile on his face and warm greeting for everyone. Our prayers and condolences to his family.

So sorry for your loss. May you find comfort in the words spoken at Revelation 21:3,4 With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: “Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his people. And God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away".
