Dr. Robert Council, Jr.I am a Veteran.

of Benton, AR

June 20, 1939 - February 14, 2020

On February 14, 2020, Dr. Robert ''Tony'' Council, 80, died peacefully at home surrounded by his wife and their four children.

Tony was born on June 20, 1939 in Fort Smith, Arkansas to Melvena and Robert Alton Council. He spent his childhood in Fort Smith until attending Cranbrook Preparatory School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Next, he earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army. Active duty found him in the medical corp in Germany. Back in Arkansas, he attended medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and then completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology there as well. Benton became his home where he practiced medicine for over 40 years. Tony, or Dr. C., as he was also known, was a beloved member of his community.

Tony will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather ''Poppy'', son-in-law, brother-in-law, and uncle. His infectious humor, warm smile, and penchant for correct grammar will forever be missed by all who knew and loved him. Tony was an avid train enthusiast and jazz aficionado. He was a lifelong pianist who brought joy to all who heard him play. He discovered the beauty of Mexico and was content to make it his favorite and only destination where he enjoyed golf, the beach, and many family vacations. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church.

Married for almost 49 years, he is survived by his wife Taffy; children Kristin McConnell (Rob), John Council (Julie), Sarah Council (Jon Kuykendall), and Justin Council; grandchildren Will, Sarah Kate, Olivia, Anna, Lily, and Mary; father-in-law John E. Hain, Jr.; sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 20, 2020 at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Benton with Rev. John Marconi and Rev. Paul Worm officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Little Rock, Arkansas.

A Rosary will begin at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 19, 2020 in the Chapel of Roller-Ballard Funeral Home in Benton, Arkansas. A time of Visitation will begin after Rosary, and end at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Catholic Charities of Arkansas (https://www.dolr.org/catholic-charities/ways-to-donate) or UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute Auxiliary (http://giving.uams.edu.)

I had the honor and priviledge of working with and around Dr. Council for 26 of his 40+ years at Saline Memorial. He delivered one of my three sons. He also cared for my sister at Benton Health Center. He was well thought of by all those he was associated with in the medical field. We will all miss him. God be with Taffy and all his family and friends.

I worked with Dr Council at Saline Memorial Hospital and found him to treat EVERYONE with Genuine Kindness. Later the Council family became friends with our daughter becoming their family babysitter. Our hearts grieve and our prayers are for "supernatural peace" for All of You: Taffy, Kristen, John, Sarah and Justin. As 1 Corinthians 15:54 says "Death is swallowed up in Victory"

I got to know Tony more and more at Our Lady of Fatima. We would talk about different issues and I grew to really like and respect this man. Darlene felt that respect towards him as well. She always addressed him as “Dr. Council.. The first time I addressed him as Dr. Council, he stated “ It’s ok if you call me Tony” And so I did. Heaven is getting a good doctor and a great man. Prayers for his family.

He was always friendly and made me laugh, even when I was pregnant with my son at the age of 38! I was not ready to start a new family, I had a 20 year old daughter and a 15 year old daughter, and thought I was through, but nope God had other plans and Dr. Council saw me through with his wit and friendly bedside manner. My prayers go out to his family for the loss of this great man.
