Jerry Curtis Holton, M.D.

of Little Rock, AR

December 3, 1936 - February 6, 2007

Jerry C. Holton, M.D. of Little Rock passed away on February 6, 2007 after an extended illness. He is survived by his wife, Gwen Shepherd Holton; children, Lauri Currier (Phillip) of Little Rock, Jennifer McIntosh (Arch) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Curt Holton (Allison) of Atlanta, Georgia. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Katie and Caroline Currier; Archie, Jeffrey and Avery McIntosh; and Alexander and Audrey Holton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Bess Holton; one brother, Gene Holton; and his parents-in-law, J. T. and Helene Shepherd.

Jerry was born December 3, 1936 in Little Rock. He was a graduate of Little Rock Central High and attended Little Rock University and Hendrix College. He earned a degree in Medicine from the University of Arkansas School of Medicine in 1962. After an internship at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, Dr. Holton began work as a general practitioner in Stuttgart, Arkansas and served as Chief of Staff at Stuttgart Memorial Hospital. In 1968, he completed a residency in Radiology at the University of Tennessee in Memphis and began to practice radiology in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Dr. Holton continued his education in 1973 as a fellow in the study of Angiography at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California. He returned to Little Rock in 1974 to practice interventional radiology with Radiology Associates, PA. Dr. Holton pioneered the field of interventional radiology in Arkansas by becoming the first trained angiographer in the state, and went on to distinguish himself in the field both nationally and internationally.

In addition to his accomplishments as a physician, Dr. Holton was a respected leader, administrator, and teacher. He led the Department of Radiology at St. Vincent Infirmary as Chairman from 1982 until his retirement in 1997. He served as Director of Angiography and Interventional Radiology, also at St. Vincent. He served as Councilor to the American College of Radiology Arkansas Chapter ACR, and as a Board Member to St. Vincent Development Foundation. He also chaired the Physicians Club. Dr. Holton found teaching rewarding, and worked as an Assistant Clinical Professor at UAMS Department of Radiology, and as an instructor at the School of Radiologic Technology at St. Vincent.

Dr. Holton was a member of the American College of Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America, the Society of Cardiovascular & Interventional Radiology, the American Medical Association, the Arkansas Medical Association, Pulaski County Medical Society, and the American Heart Association Radiology Council.

Jerry served his country as an officer in the National Guard and retired from service as a Major in the 139th Infantry Division Medical Unit.

Special thanks to the team who cared for Dr. Holton during his illness including: Dr. Jim Wellons, Dr. Joe Beck, Dr. Don Greenway, Dr. Tom Kovaleski, and Dr. Gail McCracken. The family appreciates the excellent care received by the staff of both Baptist Medical Center and St. Vincent Hospitals.

The Holton Family will receive visitors at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 7, 2007 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 8, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. at St. James United Methodist Church with interment following at Pinecrest Memorial Park.

Please send memorials to the St. Vincent Foundation, #2 St. Vincent Circle, Little Rock, Arkansas 72205.

Gwen, I am so sorry for your loss. I don't know if you remember me but I was the District Manager for Siemens Medical in Memphis in the late 70's and recall having some wonderful times with the both of you. Jerry was such a great person to work with and was respected by all for his innovations in the field of angiography. He'll be missed greatly.

Curt, Sorry to hear of you father's passing this morning. I know this is a difficult time for you and your family having expierenced losing my father in 1999. The closeness of your family will only help you persevere through this trying moment in your life. I always trusted him more than you when driving the ski boat on Lake Catherine! He truly was a wondurful person and will be sorely missed. My thoughts will be with your mother, yourself, Laurie and Jennifer. Your friend always, Bill

Sweet Gwen, Linda Nicholson and my sister, Mary Anne, both called to tell me of Jerry's passing. I was so sorry to hear about it, but glad they remembered me. My best memory of Jerry was when he worked at Safeway and helped Mom carry her groceries out to the car. He was always so nice and she adored him. That's a silly memory, I guess, but I was never with him as an adult. I'm sure he carried those qualities over into his later life. Blessings to you and your family. I will be praying for you tomorrow as you go through this trying time. I love you, sue
