Julius Frank Sutterfield passed away peacefully May 2, 2020 at Circle of Life Hospice in Springdale, AR at the age of 89 years and 11 months. He was born June 7, 1930 to James Daniel and Maude Pemberton Sutterfield.

Frank was raised in Big Flat, AR and graduated from Leslie High School in 1948. He soon joined the Army and served most of the next 3 years in the Korean War. On leave before shipping out to Korea, he met the love of his life, Alma Lee Shipman from Fifty-Six. After one date and many letters, they married when he returned in 1952. This marriage lasted 66 years.

After working briefly in the airplane plants in Wichita, KS, they moved to Fayetteville for Frank to attend the U of A on the GI Bill. Their son, Terry, was born 1 year later. They then moved to Little Rock for Frank to attend pharmacy school. Frank loved academics and excelled, graduating first in his pharmacy classand a member of Rho Chi, the pharmacy honor society. In 1960 they moved to Searcy where Frank worked as a pharmacist at Stotts Drugstore. In 1964 they moved to Morrilton and opened Sutterfield Pharmacy. In 1987 they semi retired and moved to Fifty-Six in Stone County, AR, or home as they called it. Frank continued to work part time as a pharmacist until age 82.

Frank truly loved and appreciated his native Ozark Mountains and the people and their culture. He spent much time in the woods and streams of the Ozarks-hunting, fishing and just being present. He also loved all dogs and was frequently seen with his favorite hiking companion, Lizzy, the chocolate lab. He loved and supported the Buffalo River and was so proud it was the first National River in the US Park Service.

Frank was a life long Baptist and a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church in Morrilton for many years then Fifty-Six Missionary Baptist Church in Fifty-Six. He served as Sunday School teacher and deacon at both churches
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Alma Lee, brothers J.D. and Joe Sutterfield, Doyce Kelly and sisters Bobbye Dye and Vivian Holmes.

He is survived by son Terry (Kathy) of Fayetteville and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Due to the covid virus, there will be a private graveside service for family only. A Celebration of Life Service will be planned at a later date.

The family wishes to thank Circle of Life Hospice for their excellent end of life care. They request no flowers. Memorials may be sent to The Ozark Society, Fifty- Six Cemetery or Stone County, AR Humane Society.

Terry, it’s been a very long time since our family has seen you and yours, but mom and I were just sharing our fond memories of your time in Searcy. We are so sorry for the loss of both of your parents, but thankful for having known them ! ( Your mom’s chocolate pies were the very best!… and, I would always look for her on our trips to the Ozark Folk Center!) You were blessed with wonderful parents! Praying for you and Kathy as you say “goodbye for now”.
