Sgt. Ah Sam was my drill instructor in SF training 1966. 55 years ago and I have never forgotten him. That pretty much tells the whole story. I was a raw kid and he taught me and the entire company what it meant to commit and that we could all do far more than we ever thought possible. I often wondered where he went and what he did after we left. Great to know he had a good life after the military. "That's gonna rust." LOLLLL Rest in peace, my friend.

Please accept my deepest condolences. SGM Ah Sam and I were stationed together at the UCA ROTC Department when I was a Captain. Although I lost touch with him after UCA, I never forgot him or his lessons about how to lead and care for soldiers. I'll also never forget that he talked me in to doing a helicopter rappel at one ROTC summer camp. Needless to say having never done one, I was scared silly, but I did it. I think he had just taught me a valuable lesson about not limiting oneself out of fear of failure.

ALoha, hi its been a pleasure seeing a glimps of ur life n dat i kinda felt inspired by all da great things he did n also meeting ur neece Crystal Uluwehi Ah Sam she told me alot about her Uncle n dat it makes her sad everytime she talks about him n that she wish she would have stayed longer at her stay in Arkansas, she told me while i was getting mobilize in colorado that she wish she could of gottin to know her uncle alot more and that at that time i ask her if she could visit me before i get ready to go to my depolyment but it didn't happen because her dad felt it was important for her to not go. Joseph and I entered Special Forces in 1955. We kept abreast of each other throughout the years. He was a true friend and comrade in arms. My family sends our deepest sympathy in Joe's passing. He is in our prayers.

To Lisa and Family, we are so very sad at the loss our our wonderful friend and comrade. He will be greatly missed. Joe's big smile and his jokes made him such a joy to be around. May God be with you, Lisa, in this dificult time. We will look up each night to the new bright star in the sky and think of our friend, Joe.

God bless all of you.

Our prayers are with you. It was our pleasure to have had the opportunity to meet him.

To the family, thanks so much for being a part of our lives. The camping trips the deer hunting the just plan old get togethers. What an inspiration to all Joe has been. Such a solemn man who when sitting around a campfire would usually just listen and smile but when he would speak it was always with much knowledge and wisdom. God blessed you all for coming into our lives and my prayers and thoughts will be with you all through your loss.

The Ah Sam family is so very special to our family. It was hard to see Joe suffer for so long, but he was such a strong and brave person and never wanted to give up and, for sure, he never complained. We know he is now at peace and is not suffering any more. We will continue to pray for all of you. We love you all, Robert and Shelby Schichtl

Lisa and kids, My heart is sad tonight at the lost of a good friend. I always looked forward to seeing Joe and Lisa coming to the dentist office. I loved his sense of humor and he always had a good joke to tell. He always liked to tease me. I will never forget him calling me at the dental office telling me he was the termite man and he was coming right then to spray the office! I was trying to tell him he couldn't because we had patients in the office. I never could get him back for that. Lisa, God bless you and the kids. You will be in my prayers. Your Friend, Joyce King

Robert, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers daily. If I can be of any help, please let me know. I'm here if you need me. God bless and take care. Always remembering the good times that you shared with your father will help you in your time of sorrow. Robin Gulzow (OrthoArkansas)

It is said that “life is more accurately measured by the lives you touch than by the things you acquire”. SGM Ah Sam provided nurturing, guidance and professional development for many future officers of the US Armed Services. My prayers are with your family.

Here is a poem that was written by my father, Joseph A. P. Ah Sam. He won second place in a poetry contest with this poem. I don't know what inspired him to write this poem, but it is an absolutely awesome poem. Cancer has taken his life and now he is no longer on the green side of the grass. Here is his poem. Please share it with anyone that you know that may be dealing with cancer in your life. THE QUESTION (COPYWRIGHT, JOSEPH A.P. AH SAM) HOW ARE YOU TODAY? AND I USUALLY RESPOND IN MY OWN WAY. FOR I COULD THINK OF NOTHING TO SAY. BUT I'M STILL ON THE GREEN SIDE OF THE GRASS TODAY. CANCER KNOWS NO FRIEND OF FOE. AND SOMETIMES YOU NEVER KNOW. BUT FOR EVERYDAY THAT YOU AWAKE, THANK THE LORD AND PRAY, FOR YOU ARE ON THE GREEN SIDE OF THE GRASS TODAY. BE HAPPY AND THINK POSITIVE EVERY DAY. FOR WE NEVER KNOW WHAT IS IN STORE FOR THE NEXT DAY. ONLY THE LORD KNOWS OUR DESTINY. BUT SMILE AND PRAY FOR YOU ARE STILL ON THE GREEN SIDE OF THE GRASS TODAY.

Aunty Annie, Cousin Joey, Robbie and family, I'm so sorry to hear about your dad, but I know that he is in a better place now with Grandpa, Pattie and Bryant. You are in my thoughts and my prayers.... With much love and Aloha, Cousin Maile Caravalho
