I was so sadden when I heard about Laurie. She was so much fun to be around. I will never forget the summer that Jennifer, she and I had together. Just ask Robert Waddell. Her laughter will be missed.

Dear Thomas Family,
Please know that I was not able to be at the funeral today in person but my thoughts and spirit were with each of you. I ditto what so many others have been saying... I often admired Laurie's up beat attitude through everything she had to go through. When I think back to all of the memories I have at the Thomas house on beach street to the apartment Laurie and I lived in on 7th street. Boy! we did have alot of fun and laughs. I know each of you have so many wonderful memories to cherish and my wish for each of you is for God to give you the strength and comfort you need for the many days to come.
Prayers for you all,
Shawndus Byrd Gregory

Following Laurie's cancer battle has been routine for me since the birth of Facebook. I stayed updated on her plane trips to MD Anderson, her chemo experiences and scans, her funny thoughts about the whole cancer muck, her sidekick, Razor, and her outings in her red VW Bug, as well as her trips to see Team Memphis and to Arkansas games with her friends and family. I knew that she was living life to its bursting seams, b/c she was keenly aware she was on borrowed time, and yet I wondered in awe how her smile remained so fresh; her hope never overtly waning. When I got word back in early December that she'd concluded she'd had enough, I felt a personal sense of despair. I didn't want to see her have to say "that's it", b/c I wanted her to be the survivor she had fought so hard to be. I drew strength in my everyday, comparably simplistic, struggles from Laurie's steadfast determination. On more than one occasion her Facebook posts have coaxed me into an attitude adjustment. In the wake of her passing, I feel like a chapter has been closed on a book that hasn't completely finished its story. I mourn for her family but rejoice that she's with her mama.
