Winston Cephas Ragland

of Marshall, AR

April 25, 1944 - January 12, 2013

Winston Cephas Ragland, age 68, of Marshall, Arkansas went to heaven on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at North Arkansas Regional Medical Center in Harrison, Arkansas. He was born in the small community of Grandview on April 25, 1944 to Edgar Ragland and Myrtle (Jackson) Ragland. Winston was raised in Grandview, and after living briefly out of state, returned to live the rest of his life near his childhood home.

Winston was known for many things: Above all, he loved his family. He instilled compassion, honesty, generosity and perseverance into his children, and nothing gave him more pleasure than getting his grandchildren into "good" orneriness. Winston was well known for his athleticism; he could out-run and out-box everyone. Winston worked hard his entire life in construction. He was an avid outdoorsman who cherished the Buffalo River, deer hunting and gardening. He made delicious fudge, grew the tastiest tomatoes and gave the best four-wheeler rides to his grandchildren.

Winston is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lavern Roach; two brothers, Louis Ragland and Marvin Ragland.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela Ragland of the home; three sons, Canya Ragland and Clint Ragland of Springdale, Arkansas and Michael Ragland of Pensacola, Florida; three daughters, Lorie Barnett of Rogers, Arkansas, Linda Lamm of Fort Smith, Arkansas and Ralina Pilcher of Stella, Missouri; one step-daughter, Donna Byrd of Marble, Arkansas: and grandchildren, Ashley Hall, Lauren Lamm, Brooklyn Lamm, Avery Lamm, Alexis Barnett, Iris Ragland, Layton Pilcher, Isabella Ragland and Emma Kate Ragland.

Funeral Services for Winston will be 2:00 PM Saturday, January 19, 2013 at Roller-Coffman Funeral Home in Marshall, Arkansas with Donald Ray Patterson officiating. Visitation will be 6:00 till 8:00 PM Friday in the Chapel. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery near Morning Star.

Pallbearers are Joseph Ragland, Scott Morrison, Nick Patterson, Howard Beavers, Michael Riggins and Kenny Robinson.

Honorary pallbearers are Eugene Raby, Roy Henry, John Crawford and Danny Kuykendall.

Dear family members,
All of Uncle Edgar and Aunt Myrtle's family were and are so dear to all of us. Iva, Marvin, and Winston were all close to me. We all ran and played together as we were growing up. Winston was always such a little toughie. I remember the grapevine on which he and Marvin would swing across a creek, and then drop about eight feet from the ground landing on the other side. I remember catching the mules "Old Gray and Old Blue" and riding them with no bridle. I promptly fell off, but Marvin and Winston could ride them this way. Most of all, I remember he and Carson playing together; having eating contests, making up songs, and making huts from saplings and sassafrass branches. I have many happy memories of Winston. I'm so happy I got to see him and all of his family this summer at the Ragland Reunion. We all loved him very much.

Winston, Marvin, Roger and I had a lot of fun growing up together in the Arkansas hills. I'm sure Winston and Marvin would remember coming through by our place tracking a fox in the snow. I joined the pack of "dogs" as we barked and bayed continuing to track the fox pretending we were dogs. We tracked that fox to it's den in a cliff area on a ridge overlooking Little Rocky and tried to smoke it out. In our exuberance, we never noticed our freezing feet in the snow. I could hardly wait to change clothes and go to the Buffalo fishing after church with Uncle Edgar and all his boys sometimes too. Once, Winston and I went coon hunting down Little Rockie and up the Buffalo with Old Smokie and Tanner when it was 4 below zero and nearly a full moon. Funny thing is, we caught one coon. There are many, many other memories, but there is neither the time nor the space to record them all. There are some very funny ones that are probably best told somewhere else. I miss those times.
