William B. Bishop

of Little Rock, AR

September 5, 1932 - January 23, 2012

William Bruce Bishop died January 23, 2012. Bill was born in Caney, Kansas, on September 5, 1932 and grew up in Fort Smith, Arkansas, during the depth of the Great Depression. He was able to earn enough money for one year of college and then moved to Chicago to work his way through an RN program. He served as a nurse in the Army during the Korean conflict. Afterwards, working as a nurse and with the GI Bill, he attended the University of Arkansas, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. He received his medical degree from the University of Arkansas Medical School, graduating Alpha Omega Alpha. After his internship and residency in Internal Medicine, he completed a fellowship in Cardiology at UAMS. He practiced medicine for 30 years with the Little Rock Diagnostic Clinic. Bill loved his patients and the practice of medicine.

He also loved music, particularly classical music and, especially, opera. He had studied piano all through his early schooling and also played the organ. In later years, he was something of an "opera tramp," traveling wherever he could find opera performances. His love translated into his strong support of opera programs in Little Rock.

Bill is survived by his wife, Peyton Bishop; three children, Christie Karcher (Matt) of Orlando, Florida; Bruce Bishop (Carri) of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey; and Kathryn (Giles) Stanley of East Worldham, Great Britain. There are five grandchildren: Lexy and Will Bishop, Robert and Adrienne Karcher, and William Stanley. He is also survived by his siblings, Charlotte Bishop of Burlington, Washington, Saray Jauchler (Gerry) of Memphis, Tennessee, Garth Bishop (Ellen) of Hollywood, California, Carolyn Castleman (Dale) of Phoenix, Arizona, and Jean Armstrong (John) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The family expresses its gratitude to our wonderful caregivers: Sam Bones, Joe Boyd, William Wilson and Beverly and Lee Patterson. A special thank you is extended to the Baptist Medical System and the Baptist Hospice Program for the excellent and compassionate care Bill received.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Baptist Health Foundation, 9601 Interstate 630, Exit #7, Little Rock, Arkansas 72205; UAMS Foundation, 4301 W. Markham, Slot #642, Little Rock, Arkansas 72205; or UALR Foundation Opera Fund, 2801 South University, Little Rock, Arkansas 72204.

In celebration of his life, a family visitation will be held in Christ the King Family Life Center, Wednesday, February 1, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., followed by a Rosary in the church sanctuary. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Monsignor Francis I. Malone, Thursday, February 2, 2012, at 10:00 a.m., at Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Peyton and Family,

I worked with Bill for many years. He was always gracious, honest, caring, and respectful of all. After he stopped practicing medicine, it was always a pleasure to see both of you at musical events and to receive your requests for support of UALR Friends of the Arts. I never knew he had started as a registered nurse. I started medicine as an orderly!

You are in my thoughts and prayers. I would have written a personal note, but I did not have your address. It was truly an honor to have known Dr. William Bishop.

We are so sorry for your loss. We work in the heart station at Baptist. He read the ECG interps for us and he would always come find us to sit with him while he read just to have someone to talk to while he read. We will cherish all of the conversations we had and all the times he helped us. He will always be in our hearts.

We are truly sorry for your loss. We had become somewhat out-of-touch this past year without dad to keep us up to date, yet we were aware of his struggle with health. The video was an awesome reminder of the remarkable life Bill had! It brought back wonderful memories of the many Thanksgiving celebrations with your family. We trust that you have many fond memories of Bill that will help bring you comfort during this difficult time. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.

Bill, I didn't know you, but I do know your sister, Carolyn and your niece Sharon.
Over the years, they've called on me to pray with them for you, during times when you needed a miracle.
Reading your story and looking at your pictures, I'd say, you were familiar with miracles...your life was blessed with many wonderful miracles which included family, friends, love, laughter and joy.
Your memory lives on and so do you, but in a different location, where there is no more pain, no more illness and it's a place where we all aspire to join you one day!
God bless your family with peace, comfort and the knowledge that God holds us all in His hands, so we are never too far away from those we love, who have gone on ahead of us.
