On the morning of October 6, 2010, Dr. Israel Dunn, Jr. left his earthly home.

Dr. Dunn's formative years were spent in Louisiana and Arkansas. He was the third son of five boys born to a Baptist minister and a discipline enforcing mother. He resided in the city of Little Rock, Arkansas.

Dr. Dunn attended Grambling State University, receiving a B.A. degree in Sociology and Psychology in 1968. Seeing the need to further his academic and professional growth, he attended San Francisco State University, graduating with a M.S. degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology in 1972. Still anxious for more academia, Dr. Dunn continued graduate study at California School of Professional Psychology in 1975. Dr. Dunn completed studies for a fourth degree with a Masters degree in Business Administration in 1978 from Pepperdine University. He was also an active life member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

He is the former Executive Director and Founder of East Oakland Family Health Clinic. He also worked as a Teacher and Youth Counselor on a Job Corps Project. Dr. Dunn is a former member of Allen Temple Baptist Church where he served as the Minister of Counseling.

Dr. Dunn has received numerous honors and awards which include Who's Who in Health Administration; National Institute of Mental Health Fellow; HEW Student Fellow (Family Life Project) from Grambling State University; Outstanding Services to Education from Oakland Public Schools; Community Service Recognition Award from the Governor of California in 1978-the list goes on and on, too numerous to detail.

Dr. Dunn has traveled extensively speaking and studying other education and health systems in England, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Mexico and Canada, as well as other major cities throughout the United States. He has influenced and touched many and served to help build leaders and promote building better communities in our city and state. In 2002, Dr. Dunn was named the 12th President of the historically black Arkansas Baptist College located in Little Rock, Arkansas. He came to Arkansas from Anniston, Alabama where he served as the CEO for the Anniston City Schools Foundation, Inc.

Dr. Dunn was a professor at South Arkansas Community College, El Dorado, Arkansas, until he became ill. He was an active member of St. John Baptist Church, until his death and he served faithfully. He is preceded in death by his father, Rev. Dr. Israel R. Dunn, Sr. and his brother Lacy Dunn. He was my uncle, a very nice, super smart individual he was. I recall December 2005, I was hospitalized in Martinez Co. Hospital in Martinez Ca., with a serious life threating illness, he came to see me. And I didn't know that he was ill himself. I remember hearing a laugh outside my room. Uncle has a distinctive laugh that makes you yourself laugh. He came in the room and said "man quit faking - ain't nuthin' wrong with you"...He was ALWAYS fun to be around. In my younger years and adult years, it was always fun to be around him when he and my dad would talk about relatives, pastors and other stuff, Uncle would always have my dad cracking up, and I'd be laughing not even knowing what or whom they were speaking of, it was just funny to hear him tell a story. He always talked to me about my personal life when I'd see him, and he took time to do so. I couldn't' make it to his funeral, due to lack of funds, and a fear of flying, but I hated myself for the longest time because I didn't attend. I loved him so much, Israel, his dad-my grandfather Israel Sr., and his brother Lacy, I miss them so very much. I always felt good being around them all. I still can't believe he's not physically with us. I know he had a beautiful ceremony too. .....Uncle - remember when you took me to the county fair in Pleasanton, you carried me on your shoulders, we ate cotton candy, pink popcorn, hotdogs, and soda, then later, I threw it all up ???(Lol) I was about 7 or 8, and I've never forgotten that. I love you, I miss you, I'm grateful and thankful to have had you as my uncle. And I will see you in God's heavenly kingdom. Miss You Much...Love, Your Nephew...Calvin "Cap" Dunn.

"Dip" is the name that we the class of 1965, Lincoln High, Camden, AR gave you. I will always remember you from boyhood, elementary school, junior high school, high school, college, and adult life as we remained friends forever. Man, you made me laugh so many times that I cannot even began to count the happiness that you brought to me when we would meet, or talk over the phone. You have done the Lord's work and now can rest in peace. We all shall join you in the sky. Love you man! "Joe Smead"

It was a great privilege to work with Israel Dunn for these few years at SouthArk. We are all saddened by this death. He touched many lives, did so much to help others, and was always a joy to be around. He always had time for his students and his co-workers. Numerous students have told me how much Israel inspired them and how much his classes meant to them. We are all better people for having had him in our lives. We will miss you, Israel. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

My thoughts and prayers go to all of the Dunn Family!! I will never forget the many motivating talks he would give me on the world of higher education...the good, the bad and the ugly and the many jokes he would make at me about picking the "wrong" sorority..lol! He was just so genuine!!! He truly touched the lives of those he came in to contact with and his presence will truly be missed. But do know that his spirit will live on in those of us that had the pleasure of knowing him!! GOD BLESS!!

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Israel’s passing. He was truly one of the leaders in higher education. Over the years I knew him, nothing gave me greater pleasure than to discuss the more esoteric aspects of education that challenged us as mentors and educators. He was committed to the advancement and achievement of his students and for this he will be remembered.

Please convey my condolences to the family.

To the family of Dr. Iserael R. Dunn;
I was sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Dunn. I was a student in his General and Developmentantal psychology class. I always enjoyed his style of teaching and you could really see that he had a passion for the field of study that he taught. He would often say " I know student behavior", when ever he thought that someone was trying to take an easy way out. My prayer is that God will give you the strength and courage to face the lonely days ahead and to"just look to the hills from whence cometh your help."

I gotten to chance to meet Dr. Dunn, through his Psychology classes, and he would always say "Ford, what is the topic for today, and it has to be on Behavior or the other topic's that is on my board." He knew I love to talk, so he wanted to explore my mind. When I gave a subject, he just laugh about it! "He also told me one day I am going to write a book on the things you tell me and say." I guess I never seem to fail him with my subject's or topic. Mrs. Dunn; Dr. Dunn; will be truly miss in life as well as in studies.

It is so hard for me to hear of another's passing that was born in the same month and year as myself, and quite another thing to hear of all the accolades and experiences Dr. Dunn, Jr. has been justly afforded.

I share Dr. Dunn's thirst for knowledge, having earned my Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice at my age. I am now pursuing my Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice toward a goal of Doctorate in Criminal Justice, speciality in Forensics.

To Dr. Israel Dunn, Jr.'s large family, including his mother, I offer my deepest sympathies on his passing. Mrs. Pearl Dunn, I have been where you are now, having lost my dear husband in 2001. I know the pain you are going through at this moment in time and I pray the good Lord will hold you in His compassionate and loving arms as long as you need Him.

To Mrs. Vyleria Dunn I offer also my deepest sympathies with her son's passing. I have never lost a child so I cannot speak to you from experience. However, I trust and pray in the Lord each and every day and I will surely hold you and your daughter-in-law, Pearl, and grandchildren, Daphne; Shavon; and Rinaldi, along with your other sons, Gerald and Luther in my prayers daily.

With sincere condolences and a love in Christ,
