May 7, 1949 - September 8, 2010

Wanda Faye Jones, 61, of North Little Rock passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2010. She was born in Little Rock to the late Hoyt and Marcella Durnie Williams.

She was a member of Park Hill Baptist. Wanda was a Librarian for 29 years. She retired from North Pulaski High School. After retirement she and husband, Bob collaborated to create framed poetry and photography exhibits. Her poetry, creative nonfiction, and fiction frequently won awards in literary magazines and anthologies. She enjoyed presenting poetry readings and workshops. Wanda Faye felt poetry was essential for living creatively with cancer, and writing allowed her to have an excellent quality of life. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. She won numerous writing awards including 2010 Creekwalker Poetry Prize. She was a member of Central Arkansas, Penpoint Writer Group, Poets Roundtable of Arkansas, and Poetry Societies of Oklahoma, Missouri and Alabama. She was also a member of SPRTA, AEA, NEA, ARTA, and the Hays Center Red Hat Society. Wanda Faye was a published writer; her book "Erasing People" contains a collection of Chemo Poems.
Her love for poetry and writing was very comforting to her through out the years.

She is survived by her husband, Robert D Jones; one sister, Barbara Jean McKinney and husband, Carroll C; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral service will be at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Park Hill Baptist Church with Reverend Luke Flesher officiating. Interment will follow at Walters Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Friday, September 10, 2010 at Roller-Owens Funeral Home, 5509 John F. Kennedy Blvd. North Little Rock, AR 72116 (501-791-7400).

I just wanted to let Wanda's family know that I am currently writing a college thesis based off of some of her ideas. I never got the pleasure of meeting wanda, but her work is fantastic. Just thought it might be nice to know.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Wanda at a CARTI retreat, and I thouroughly enjoyed our conversation together. She showed me photographs and read me poems that were so pleasing and comforting to my soul. She will be greatly missed here on Earth, but I know that Heaven is a better place with her in it.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, Bob, during these sad times. Wanda wrote beautiful poetry and had a delightful personality. I cherish even more her book of poetry that I purchased when she came and spoke to the Pioneer Branch of Pen Women last Spring.

My thoughts have been with you all these past few weeks and I am so sorry that I was out of the country last week when Barbara called to leave a personal message that Wanda had left us all too soon. I think she was probably with me as I was having tea in an English garden last week...something that she loved so much. She taught us all how to live and learn. I will miss seeing her at the library events. I am so glad to have a signed book of her poems. I will cherish our friendship forever.

I mourn the passing of Wanda Faye Jones but am thankful I got to know her. Faye was skilled and had talents which she generously used to inspire others. Throughout her ordeal, she was constantly and ably supported by her husband, Bob. It was an exemplary marriage; Faye and Bob were the ideal couple. When reading obituaries, I often wonder if the encomium is exaggerated. In the case of Wanda Faye, I know from personal experience that it is not. I read every entry thus far on this Guestbook, and I could not agree more with each heart-felt sentiment.

The very first time I met Faye, at PRA Poetry Day in Hot Springs, she encouraged me and urged me to continue writing poetry. In a room full of strangers, I had found a friend, and all I had to do was introduce myself. Never before or since have I met anyone so quick to make me feel welcome, feel a part of the group rather than apart from it. Her talent was undeniable, her personality unmatched, her life unforgettable. Thank you, Faye, for being my friend and mentor. May God be a comfort to your husband Bob and your family.

There are those we meet and like immediately, that we feel close and closer to as time goes on; then there are those even more appealing, those who impress us by their warmth, friendship, and zest for life. Faye made that kind of impression on me, and I'm sure on others. I cherish the friendship we had and I have her poetry to remind me of what a wonderful person she was in life and will forever remain in memory.

Arkansas lost an incredible talent with Faye's passing. I can only imagine what poems she's now creating in Heaven with the other many greats from throughout history. Faye was a role model for me and I can't ever remember not seeing her without a smile, even with the pain she suffered in recent years. As a fellow writer, I always struggled with my fiction if I felt a "four-letter-word" was needed to express some character's action. Especially among my fellow Christian friends and what they might think. Faye was never shy to offer advice, and helped me find compromise in my prose. Bob and her family will always be in my prayers.
