of Alexander, AR
February 15, 1935 - July 21, 2007
Patsy Ann Bennett Young Jonas of Alexander passed out of this life into the arms of her Lord on Saturday July 21, 2007 in her home surrounded by the love of family and friends. Born February 15, 1935 to Oscar Lee and Cora Belle (Carney) Bennett in the Centerhill community located north of Jonesboro in the home of her maternal grandparents Jim and Clara Roeder Carney after the family moved from Tennessee. Patsy was the eldest of five children.
Patsy received her formal education from the New Hope, Herman and Fifty-Six grade schools. In the fall of 1949 the Bennett family moved to Bono, Arkansas where Patsy graduated from Bono High School in May 1955.
Later that year on December 19, Patsy married Airman Thurston Stamps (Jeff) Young of Ben Wheeler, Texas. Jeff and Patsy resided in Altus, Oklahoma where Airman Young was stationed with the 5039th S.A.C. Supply Squadron. While in Altus, daughter Treva Joy was born in the base hospital on February 3, 1957.
In June 1958, the Youngs moved to Abilene, Texas due to the transfer of Airman Young's 5039th S.A.C. Squadron and the deployment of the 96th Bomb Wing to Dyess Air Force Base. While in Abilene, daughter Teresa Joyce was born on September 22, 1958. Later that same year, Young was reassigned to Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska. A short time later, Patsy and the girls joined him in the last frontier. What a thrill to be living in the great land of bears, moose, Caribou, and the wilds when Alaska became the 49th state of the United States on January 2, 1959.
While at Elemendorf, son Jeffrey Bryan was born on November 8, 1960. The day was made even more memorable as the air waves buzzed with the news that John F. Kennedy had beaten his opponent Richard M. Nixon and had been elected as the 36th President of the United States.
Airman Young was honorably discharged in 1962, and the Youngs moved to Ben Wheeler, Texas where they lived for one year before residing two years in Tyler, Texas. The Youngs then moved in 1964 to Pine Bluff, Arkansas where they divorced.
Patsy remained in Pine Bluff where she met and married Rowland Fredrick Jonas on February 4, 1966. The Jonases moved to Little Rock, Arkansas in 1974 with the relocation of Arkansas Power and Light's main offices. In 1986, they moved to the Benton area where Patsy and Fred separated in January 2004.
Other than chopping and picking cotton as a teenager with her mother, Patsy has held positions with various businesses which include the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company, Weyerhauser Paper Mill, Ben Pearson's Archery, Betty's Gift Shop as assistant manager and the Etcetera Gift Shop in Pine Bluff as well as Beans, Grains, and Things and as assistant manager at Hancock's Fabrics in Little Rock. Patsy retired in 1979 only to become a Nanny with a clientele made up of doctors, attorneys, pharmacists, and other professionals. She considered herself "A jack of all trades and master of none".
Patsy's burning interest was that of a genealogist. Having traveled extensively throughout the United States, she has met many of her distant kith and kin as well as forming many new friendships with people whom she encountered along the way.
The only regret ever expressed by Patsy was that she permitted her father and brothers to talk her out of joining the U.S. Air Force.
Predeceased by her parents, Oscar (1981) and Cora Belle (1997) and brothers, Jackie Bruce and Billy Rhoder Bennett, Patsy is survived by her husband Fred Jonas; sisters, Charlene (J.D.) Hawthorne and Connie (Jerry) Estes; two daughters, Treva Young of Vermillion SD, Teresa Quinn of Alexander, AR and son Jeff (Buddy) Young of Clarksville,TN. I spent time with my cousin Patsy when we were both young and our parents visited each other. She was always so nice and we had so much fun together. I have always admired her and her close relationship with our Grandmother Bennett. I am so happy I got to see her at the reunion in 2000.

Pat was so special to our family. She helped raise my daughters and babysat with them for years. She was a wonderful person. Alexa and Anna always remember her love for history. She went on to sit for other children who were friends of ours and touched many lives. She will be greatly missed. Cathey Robbins

I am a former classmate of Patsy's. We always enjoyed our annual Bono School reunions. Patsy always had lots of pictures for us to look over and discuss memories. We were looking forward to seeing her again this year. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Thinking of you in your time of sorrow and thank you Charlene for calling. Patsy was such a nice lady and an inspiration, I'm so glad I had the opportunity to see her again at our family reunion.

I will also remember Patsy as a friendly lady who always wanted me to send new pictures of my children. She'd occasionally send me notes and always included recipes in them. I will always treasure the beautiful quilt that she gave me. Randy and Julie (Mattison) Marker

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Patsy Jonas was a wonderful woman who loved the Lord and shared his love with all thoes whom she came into contact. She was amazingly bright and loved to read and work cross-word puzzles. Her positive attitude was very refreshing. She served others tirelessly and was always willing to help us whenever we needed a babysitter. One time she even drove to our house in the snow, and had to leave her car over night because the streets became to slick for her to get back up the hill. She fought cancer corageously and even during her rounds of chemo, would call and offer to babysit. She was a brave woman and relied on her faith to help her overcome whatever obstacles life threw her way. We loved "Miss Patty". She will be dearly missed. Sara, Ken, Matthew, Nathan and Victoria Haynes.

To the family with loving thoughts and memories I shared through the years with your sister, mother, grandmother and greatmother. I feel like I know all of you through her wonderful letters and phone calls. She was a special lady. Jane

Patsy will be remembered as a friend who had a unique way of expressing her friendship with the presentation of her beautifully made quilts. Son and daughter-in-law of the late Jesse B. Mattison
