Jimmy Wayne Hinson

of North Little Rock, AR

April 28, 1939 - December 25, 2013

Jimmy W. Hinson, 74 of North Little Rock passed into an eternity in Heaven on December 25, 2013.
Jim was born in Gravel Ridge, AR on April 28, 1939 to Samuel G. Hinson and Pauline Henry Hinson. His parents and brother, Jerry D. Hinson of North Little Rock preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 34 years, Margarett, daughter Dorothy Hinson Northern (Steven Ross) of Memphis and son David (Judi) Shipps of North Little Rock, mother-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends who will miss his smile and unique sense of humor.
Jim was an Eagle Scout, member of the Elks Lodge North Little Rock and was an active member of Liberty Fellowship Church of North Little Rock, AR. Jim attended and played football at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, later attended and graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, AR. He also completed course work and studies at the University of Texas. Jim held a Public Accounting License, Social Workers License, Insurance License, and was an Enrolled Agent licensed to practice before the tax court representing taxpayers against the IRS.
Quite a unique man, Jim was a public accountant for many years. Jim was employed for two years in private accounting as a cost accountant and an auditor for twenty-three manufacturing plants located in the southeastern United States. In 1972, he began his work for the State of Arkansas as accounting manager for the Division of Developmental Disability Services and retired as Chief Financial Officer for the Arkansas Department of Human Services in 1988. After retiring from the state of Arkansas, Jim became a Financial Consultant and eventually Chief Financial Officer for Arkansas Enterprises for the Developmentally Disabled, Inc. (AEDD, Inc.). His association with AEDD, Inc. spanned well over 25 years to the present date. After retirement from AEDD, Inc. in August of 2010, Jim became an active member of the AEDD, Inc. Board of Directors, serving until his death. Jim also served as a private public accountant, keeping and maintaining an office in the Levy Community serving the Little Rock/North Little Rock area residents maintaining the books for many businesses and individuals and also for many years doing tax returns for military families, firefighters, policemen and other individuals free of charge. He and his wife Margarett were business partners. He helped establish and assist his wife in the operation of her restaurants and business pursuits in Little Rock and Conway.
His love and advocacy for individuals with Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities was evident. Jim gave feely of his time, energy, knowledge and because of his financial acumen; Jim was often the go to person for ideas, advice and consultation regarding decisions and regulations that would impact the Developmentally Disabled Community and service system in Arkansas. His knowledge and input will have a lasting impact on the Developmentally Disabled Community in Arkansas. His keen interest in the current transformation efforts of the Developmental Disability Service system would continue to his death. One could not see Jim at any time, in which he would not ask or inquire as to the current state of the DD provider system and the impact of current transformation efforts on individuals with disabilities. His love and interest for individuals with disabilities was his primary focus.
A man with a big heart and love for children, Jim was also affectionately known and dressed as Santa Claus to many children across the Little Rock/North Little Rock area. It was only fitting that he died on Christmas Day. During the Christmas season, Jim would dress as Santa Claus, intrigue and capture the hearts and minds of children everywhere in many places over the Little Rock/North Little Rock area. He also appeared as Santa Claus to the Developmentally Disabled clients of AEDD, Inc. and many other community provider non-profits.
Jim was a gourmet cook. He loved to cook the finest of foods, would entertain and host friends and family. Up to his death, he was anxious to go home so he could plan his annual Christmas party and talked of cooking and preparing for his friends and family.
Jim was a master poker player, loved a good poker game and competed in the World Series of Poker Championships on many occasions. Jim could gamble, play, compete and win with the best. He could handicap the horses at Oaklawn track better than the professionals.
Jim will be greatly missed by his friends and family but his spirit will live on in the hearts and lives of those who knew him.
