Charles "Ike" Marshall Sharp

Charles Marshall “Ike” Sharp died on May 2, 2010 at Little Rock, Arkansas. He was born September 4, 1928 near Warren, Arkansas to Leonard Orlando Sharp and Emma Hargis Sharp. He attended Pine Bluff High School and graduated from Warren High School in 1947. He was educated at Ouachita Baptist University, Northern Arizona University and The University of Arizona. He married Billie June Geurin on June 8, 1951.

While at Ouachita, he was an outstanding football player known especially for his kicking abilities and was an All-Arkansas Intercollegiate tackle. After graduating from Ouachita, he was a coach and teacher at Mountain Home High School and Prescott High School before moving to Douglas, Arizona, in 1956. While in Douglas, he coached football and baseball and was chosen Arizona High School Coach of the Year in both sports. He later became Athletic Director and Dean of Students at Douglas High School and was honored as Athletic Director of the Year of The Southwest. He was inducted into The Arizona Baseball Coaches’ Hall of Fame in 2005.

He loved people and had a special gift of encouraging those around him. He was an ordained Baptist Deacon for over fifty years and a former member of The Board of Trustees of Ouachita Baptist University. He loved Ouachita and supported the school in many ways throughout his life. He was one of the founders of The Tiger Gridiron Club at Ouachita and was also inducted into the Ouachita Athletic Hall of Fame. He was formerly a member of First Baptist Church in Arkadelphia, and was a recent member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas.

He was especially revered by his family. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Billie June Geurin Sharp; his children: Paul Dewey (Sherrie) Sharp, Dr. Jane Marie Sharp, David Roy (Carrie) Sharp; and grandchildren Aaron (Tiffaney) Sharp, Adam (Julie) Sharp, Ashlee Nicole Sharp, and Jordan Taylor Sharp, and great-grandchild, Aiden Viala Sharp.

Visitation will be held at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 4th from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Burial will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday in the W. A. Geurin plot in Old Rosemont Cemetery, Benton, Arkansas on Military Road, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at 1st Baptist Church, Arkadelphia, Arkansas, under the direction of Dr. Rex M. Horne. A reception will follow at the church.

Pallbearers are grandsons, Aaron Sharp, Adam Sharp and Jordan Sharp, along with former athletes, Manny Valenzuela, Bugsy Lewis and Hollis Phillips, all from Douglas High School, Douglas, Arizona.

Honorary pallbearers are: Frank Adams, Buddy Benson, Ray Borane, Roy Cockerell, Ben Elrod, Jack Mitchell, Rex Nelson, Bobby Newman, Charlie Payne, Jiggs Ramsey, Kenneth Sandifer, Bosco Selchow, Reggie Speights, Dewey Stark, Jim Tabor, Tab Turner, Bill Vining, Sr., and Spec Willingham.
