Edward A. Halter, Jr.

of Conway, AR

January 31, 1926 - July 4, 2009

Edward A. Halter Jr., 83, long active in Conway business and civic circles, died Saturday (July 4, 2009). He was born in Conway Jan. 31,1926, the son of the late Edward A. Halter Sr., and Olympia Balmaz Halter. His ancestors were among a group of immigrants from Switzerland and France to Conway in 1882.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Dorothy Halter Crafton, and her husband, Leo "Hippo" Crafton II.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Dorothy J. Gates Halter; his children, Stephen T. Halter and wife Franci of Enola, Patricia A. Moix and husband David of Conway, Robert E. Halter and wife Kim of Conway and Bridget R. Davanzo and husband Carmen of Conway; 12 grandchildren; Terri Ann Hall of Marvell, Brian D. Moix, Melissa Vaughan, Kathleen Moix, Chad Halter, Mallory Halter, Katie Halter, Alex Halter, Brittany Davanzo, Monica Davanzo and Nicholas Davanzo, all of Conway and Krista Davanzo of Stevens Point, WI; and 9 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by nephews Leo Crafton III and Hal Crafton.
Edward was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He graduated from St. Joseph High School, was an alumnus of Hendrix College and received a bachelor of science degree in physics from the University of Arkansas.
Edward entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1944 during World War II and served until 1946. He also served on active duty during the Korean Conflict and retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve with 20 years service.

He was co-owner and manager of City Lumber Co., with his uncles, Gabe and Felix Balmaz, for many years in downtown Conway.
He was a member of the Conway Kiwanis Club for more than 50 years and was a past president of it. He was active at St. Joseph Church and served as a board member of the St. Joseph School Endowment and as a member of the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Knights of America.

In his spare time, Edward enjoyed woodworking, organic gardening, and canning of the vegetables that he grew. One of his favorite activities was to join his friends, including World War II veterans, for late morning coffee and conversation on a variety of topics at Bob's Grill and at Ed's Bakery.
Wake service will be from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., Monday, July 6, 2009, at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home, Conway. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 7th, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Conway with the Rev. George Spangenberg CSSp and Father Charles Thessing officiating. Burial will follow in Crestlawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers are Bill Hegeman, Al Hiegel, Leo Crafton, Hal Crafton, Bob Gates, Ronnie Gates, Brian Moix and Chad Halter. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Conway Kiwanis Club.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph School Endowment.
