Joseph Stephen Hertlein

of Subiaco, AR

August 13, 1953 - December 11, 2025

Joseph Stephen Hertlein, 72, of Subiaco, Arkansas passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on August 13, 1953 at Fort Chaffee to his parents, Joseph Daniel and Hilda Lou (Core) Hertlein.

Steve worked several years for Kroger Grocery Store. He began his career at the Paris, Arkansas location before transferring to the Russellville store while attending Arkansas Tech University, a move that would change his life forever. It was there he met his wife, Suzanne, and the two built a lifetime of memories together. He later worked as a carpenter and had a hand in building several homes in the surrounding area, especially working with Comb's Home Builders and House Movers. Steve was always very handy and enjoyed woodworking, but above all, his grandchildren were the center of his world. He never missed a chance to cheer them on at their events, whether it be a basketball, softball, volleyball, cheer, or band concert, he loved every moment spent with them. If he wasn't driving all over the country to see his grandkids or teaching them how to be ''savages'' at card games and dominoes, you could find him working in his shop or out on the farm.

In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by three brothers in law, John McHargue, John Lane, and Glen Tilmon, and one sister in law, Kim Tilmon.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Suzanne (Hoffsteter) Hertlein of Subiaco; two daughters, Ashley Young and husband Shane of Dardanelle and Megan Henson and husband Jared of Clarksville; one son, Matthew Hertlein of Subiaco; six grandchildren, Emily Young, Kate Young, Brooklynn Meimerstorf, Kinley Young, Hayden Meimerstorf and Joseph Henson; four sisters, Karen Binz and husband Donald of Paris, Barbara McHargue of Virginia, Kay Berry of Jasper and Donna Hertlein of Subiaco; and one aunt, Connie Hertlein of Subiaco.

A memorial visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, December 16th, 2025 at Roller Funeral Home Chapel in Paris, with words spoken by family at 6 pm. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Roller Funeral Home.

Honorary pallbearers will be Shane Young, Jared Henson, Jessie Atkinson, Cory Berry, Taylor Tilmon, Garrett Askins, Tom Frederick, and John Poole.

Steve was a true old school craftsman. He built a house one 16 penny nail at a time with a hammer as big and strong as he was. I would watch him argue with a level and shave a board square many times. He was a man of few words. Get the job done, set a pace, eat lunch relax then finish the day. It wasn’t about speed it was about whatever he was doing being right. I always enjoyed being around him and learned many things in his presence. His time with Combs Home Builders and House Movers meant a lot to all of us. He will always be apart of many great memories and a great example of what a true role model should be.
