of Houston, AR
December 18, 1934 - August 29, 2024
Jerry Stuhr, 89 passed away August 31,2024. He was born on Dec 18,1934 to Leroy and Laura (Wilder) Stuhr in Rock Island, Il.
Jerry grew up with a passion for horses and livestock, specifically the rodeo industry. At the age of 16 he left home to pursue riding bulls and chasing the rodeo circuit until he finally achieved membership in the RCA.
His passion for horses increased greatly after he exhausted his body riding bulls for twenty years. He began breaking colts and training horses using a firm hand but soft touch as we now know it to be the resistance free method long before its existence. His roping career escalated well into his late 70's and earned him a couple of trophy saddles and several buckles.
Jerry was fierce, determined, and stubborn in everything that he encountered. He was a cancer survivor of which he was given a grim diagnosis but said "they haven't invented the disease yet that will kill me". It cut short his career as an iron worker, but not his will to pursue working with his hands and horses.
He married Jessie Graves in 1987 and together they built a life in Damascus, AR while he roped and worked as a cattle and ranch hand for several private ranches. He always had a loyal canine by his side.
He is preceded in death by his parents and beloved stepdaughter, Roxie Hagood, along with one brother and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Jessie; a son, JD Stuhr of Hope, AR; two step sons, Billy Charles (Donna) Bostain of Houston AR; Shawn Bostain (Sandra) , Houston, AR; brother Russell Stuhr, Port Byron, Il ; two grandsons; five step grandchildren; numerous great and step great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
All friends are welcome to join a celebration of life service to be held on Thursday September 26, at the Damascus Road Cowboy Church at 6:30 PM, officiated by Pastor Jeff Deckard.
