Betty Jo Mathis

of Searcy, AR

October 15, 1935 - February 19, 2024

Betty Jo Mathis, age 88, of Searcy, Arkansas went to be with her Lord on February 19, 2024 at her home. She was born October 15, 1935 to the late William Kelsie (Buck) and Norma Caldonia (Maguffee) Sutherland in Camp, Arkansas.

Jo is described by her family as being spunky, nurturing and a wonderful mother and grandmother, who was very passionate in her spirituality with God. She loved her family and going to church. You could always find her reading her Bible or a good book and cooking for her loved ones. She also enjoyed her flowers, talking about politics, sports and willing to travel almost anywhere. Jo worked at Harding University for several years in financing. She loved "junking" at estate sales with her girls and redoing furniture. She was always relaying family history and passing down family heirlooms. Jo had several pets throughout her life and loved her dog, Spanky.

Jo is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Kennith Mathis of 41 years of marriage; three daughters, Kimberly Jo Mathis, Kimberly Elise Donna (Rich) and Tracy Lynn Vest (Ron); sisters, Patsy Jean (Sutherland) Crouch and Mary (Sutherland) Scribner and a host of other relatives and friends.

She is survived by her son, James Brian Mathis; grandchildren, Eleni Allaire Gilbert (Wes), Kennith Oakley Vest, Hunter Mathis and great-grandchildren, Briar Creed Gilbert, Wyatt Lee Vest and Amelia Renee Mathis

Visitation will be held 10:00AM Thursday, February 22, 2024 with service to follow at 11:00 at Roller-Daniel Funeral Home Chapel in Searcy, Arkansas. The interment will be at Salem Cemetery in Salem, Arkansas.

Jo was a very special lady, as were her daughters. She was instrumental in helping me get the financial aid I needed at Harding. Kim was such a good friend to me through all our school years and summers playing softball. Her dad was a great coach.
Condolences to the family. It is comforting to know they've been reunited.
