James Whalen, 84, of Mountain Home, Arkansas passed away Sunday, January 14, 2024. He was born July 23, 1939 in Terre Haute, Indiana to Edward and Louise (Roach) Whalen. He was married to Betty (Pool) Whalen. He was a graduate of Carnegie Melon with an Engineering degree and later achieved rank of Captain with the U.S. Army as a combat engineer.

After the military, he became president of Moore-Langen Printing and Publishing Company and later CEO of Streetwise Promotions and moved to Arkansas in his retirement. He was an Eagle Scout, volunteered with the Boy Scouts, Salvation Army and the Baxter Health Foundation. He served on many boards in both Indiana and Arkansas and served on the city council in Mountain Home.

James is survived by his wife; 2 children, Jim Whalen (Laura) and Cathy Collins (Larry); 2 step-children, Kevin Braswell (Leigh Anne) and Jason Braswell (Ashley); 1 grandchild, Brianna Collins; 5 step-grandchildren, Morgan, Nathan, Nora, Evan and Luca Braswell and 1 sister-in-law, Joan Whalen. He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother, Edward Whalen.

A celebration of life will be held in Indianapolis and Mountain Home in the future.

Prayers for the family. Heaven gained another angel. He was such a joyful and kind soul. I enjoyed working with him at the Bargain Box. My favorite saying of his whenever I asked for his help was “does this please you?”. He will be missed.

No words can express how heart breaking the loss of this dear soul will be to those of us blest to have known him.
