Buron Griffin, Sr.I am a Veteran.

of Helena, AR

August 31, 1927 - October 16, 2023

Buron Griffin, Sr. passed away at home on Sunday, October 16, 2023 at the age of 96. He was born in Cypert, Arkansas where he worked on the family farm while attending school in Marvell. He enlisted in the United States Navy during WWII, where he served in the South Pacific aboard the USS Sitkoh Bay. He was honorably discharged and returned to Phillips County to farm. He met his wife of sixty-seven years, Jewell Jackson and they had a remarkable life together, raising a family, working in the community and their Baptist Church, attending horse races, traveling, hunting, fishing and entertaining.

Buron loved his family, his farm and working hard. He had an expectation for himself and others to always do one's best. He instilled a strong work ethic into his family and led by example. Buron was involved in multiple businesses during his lifetime, including Buron Griffin Farms, Elaine Implement Company, Helena Wholesale and Helena Rice Dryer and Grainery, to name a few.

Buron was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of Sandy Bayou Duck Club, a former member of Hardin Point Hunting Club. He had every species of North American Turkeys as trophies on his wall. Buron was member number 365 of the North American Sheep Hunters Association Grand Slam Club. This honor was achieved by completing a collection of four North American Big Horn Sheep.

Buron was a single engine pilot and a former member of the Flying Farmer's Association. He won Best Spot Lander at the Helena Airport and taught others to fly. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he attended until his health prevented his attendance. He was also a thirty-second degree Mason.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Jewell Jackson Griffin; his parents, Frank Griffin Sr., Louise Mixon Griffin; brothers, Brooks Griffin, Frank Griffin, Jr; sister, Ruth Griffin and grandson, Griffin Marczuk.

Buron is survived by his son, Buron Griffin, Jr. (Judy) of Helena, Arkansas; daughter, Mary Jane Orellano (Daniel) of Little Rock, Arkansas; grandson, Tracy Griffin (Amy) of Helena, Arkansas; great-grandchildren, Tripp and Carolyne Griffin; sisters, Maureen Jenkins of Phoenix, Arizona, Fran Ourzo of Dallas, Texas and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Mr. Buron's dedicated care givers lead by Nancy Hall, Sharon Moody, Jada Moody, Carlisha Lonzo, LaKedia Moody and Erma Moody. We give a special thank you to Dr. Scott Hall, Leigh Ann Guest and Bobbie Ford. The family is grateful to Cecilia Smith, RN and all the staff of Elite Hospice, who provided comfort and care to Buron at the end of his life.

Graveside Services will be held 11 AM Thursday, October 19, 2023 at Cypert Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers will be Raymond Hill, Trey Jackson, Rhett Mauldin, Jacky Bradley, Brian Ward, Louis Martinez, Jimmy Gordon, Pointer Hall Jr., Mike Butler, Jake Moneymaker and Mike Moneymaker. Brother Cliff Bernard will officiate. Following the service, the family invites everyone to join them in a celebration of Buron's life at the farm headquarters shop for a fish fry and good memories.

The family requests memorials be made to DeSoto School in Helena, Arkansas or the charity of your choice.

I didn’t know you personally; only met you once but my daughter, Taejah King worked as one of your caregivers during her summer breaks from college. Her daily stories she told after work were very entertaining and I could tell you were cared for and had a soft spot in her heart as well as my Aunt Nancy Moody. Rest well Mr. Buron.??

Buron was definitely one of a kind superb person. He loved life and held his family and friends close to his heart. I’ve played many a hand of Gin with him and always hated when he would ask me “Where do you go in the fall?” I learned a lot from him! I will miss him terribly! But at least now he can fly again!! And he doesn’t have to be busier than a cranberry merchant! My prayers for the family and friends to deal with such a great loss!

Very sorry to hear of Buron’s passing. He was a great man and a true gentleman. I can still picture him teaching my son how to play gin rummy at Sandy Bayou. That was a long time ago. Buron will be missed but fondly remembered. A goal we should all ascribe to.
