Joe Matt Freeman

of Subiaco, AR

June 6, 1940 - June 18, 2023

Due to power outages in the Subiaco area the funeral Service has been moved to Roller Funeral Home in Paris at 10:00 AM, Thursday, June 22, 2023.

Joe Matt Freeman, age 83, of Subiaco, Arkansas passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2023, in Paris, Arkansas.

Joe Matt was born on June 6, 1940 in Subiaco to William "Logan" Freeman and Ella "Lorene" Freeman, both of whom preceded him in death.

He graduated from Scranton High School and married his wife of 63 years, Nelta Elaine Mabry Freeman on July 18, 1959 at Oak Grove Holiness Church. Joe Matt provided for his family in many ways by working for the natural gas drilling industry before becoming a dairy farmer, then becoming a poultry grower for Tyson Foods. He retired from farming and established a small dozer and track hoe service, helping many folks in his community through the years.
In 2001, Joe Matt felt a calling to become an ordained minister in the Baptist faith and he lovingly served as pastor of the Subiaco Freewill Baptist Church, now known as the Subiaco Worship Center for many years.
In his younger days, Joe Matt enjoyed basketball and softball, as well as fishing and rodeos. He was one of the original founders of the L. J. Allen Rodeo Arena in Scranton and he loved seeing young people, especially his three children, compete in rodeos. He was a long-time member of the McKendree Cemetery Board of Directors and served on the Subiaco Crossroads Rural Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Nelta of the home in Subiaco; daughter, Robin and husband, Leon Schluterman; son, Joey and wife, Linda Freeman of Scranton and son, Bryan and wife, Shela Freeman of Subiaco; seven grandsons, Curtis and wife, Niki Schluterman, Neal and wife, April Schluterman, Douglas and wife, Andrea Schluterman, and Wesley Schluterman all of Subiaco, Hasten Freeman of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Bryant Lee Freeman and Megan Evans of Charleston, Arkansas; Dustin Freeman and fiance, Ryan Judd of Fayetteville, North Carolina and one granddaughter, Stephanie Elaine Luttrell of Barling, Arkansas. Joe Matt was a great-grandfather to thirteen-great-grandchildren (six girls and seven boys) all of whom were his pride and joy.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 21 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Roller Funeral Home in Paris, Arkansas.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 22 at 10:00 am at the Subiaco Worship Center with Pastor J. D. Swaim officiating. Burial will follow at McKendree Cemetery in Subiaco under the direction of Roller Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Joe Matt's seven grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joe's memory to the McKendree Cemetery Fund at Logan County Bank in Subiaco or Scranton, Arkansas.

We so hate to hear this. Back in my days of quartet singing, Joe Matt was at about everyone we did at Dublin or Scranton. He and Nelta would be there and Joe Matt would be clapping along.

Lois said she remembers him yelling over to her at her basketball games about how many points he expected from her each night.

Our thoughts and prayers to you all.

I am so sorry for your loss. Joe Matt was 10 years older than me so he was someone I looked up to as a young boy. I still remember him speeding down the dirt road in front of our house in his ‘55 black Chevy and I mean speeding. I loved watching him play basketball. He was so physical under the goal. It was said the Paris football coach visited him wanting him to transfer to Paris to play football. His dad and my dad were great friends being that our properties connected one another. They had a great working buddy relationship . Our dad’s helped one another with their farming duties quite often. I also remember eating many meals at his house and Lorene made the best fried chicken. God bless you and comfort you at this time of loss.
