of Little Rock, AR
February 7, 1952 - April 6, 2023
Dr. Phillip Coates of Little Rock, Arkansas went to be with the Lord on April 6, 2023. He was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas on February 7, 1952 to Waymon and Phyllis Coates.
Phillip was preceded in death by his parents and older brothers, Wayne and Jerry Coates. He is survived by his nieces and nephews; Allison Davis and her husband, Chris, Clay Coates and his wife, Jenny, Kimberly Harrison and her husband, Grant, Katherine Coates and Andrew Coates and his wife, Clare. He is also survived by many great nieces and nephews who will genuinely miss their Uncle Phil.
Phillip grew up in Stuttgart and had a great love for his family and brothers who he was always so proud to speak of and share stories about. He was a Stuttgart Ricebird before attending the University of Arkansas for undergraduate work. He then proudly became an LSU Tiger, where he attended dental school. For decades, Phillip served his patients all throughout central Arkansas and beyond and we were all so proud of his accomplishments and his commitment to his work. He was an incredibly supportive Uncle who loved to fix up bikes for his great niece and attend sporting events for his great nephews. He was faithful to a close circle of friends and so many will miss the humor and joy that he added to our lives. He loved attending Bible Study Fellowship and he will be remembered by his humble and selfless way of living. And we certainly must share his deep love for his cats, Sheba and Tuna. Although we know his level of care will be hard to match, we will do our best to love them as he did. We are comforted that He trusted the Lord throughout his days and that because of Christ's resurrection power he will join his family for eternity.
There will be a memorial service on Monday, April 10 at 10am at Epoch Church, 924 Main Street, Little Rock, Arkansas.
Phil, it’s been a year since you left us. We miss you so much. Jerry lost his best friend. He cusses you for leaving him every so often. Til we meet again.
I am sorry to learn of Dr. Coates's passing. He was such a good man and a great dentist. He cared so much about helping my husband and daughter with dental problems because of their disabilities. He became a dear friend to all of my family and me. Always had a kind word and a hug when seeing him outside the office. Love and prayers for him family.
We are so sad to hear of Dr. Coates passing! We knew him only as our dentist. But he was such a gem and one of a kind who always talked about his wonderful nieces & nephews!! Loved this sweet man and praying for the families!
Phillip was also an '83 classmate of mine at LSUSD. I am really sad to hear of his passing and I feel blessed to have known Phillip. RIP

I met Phil 4 years ago through Jerry , his best friend. Phil was a VERY nice man. Always doing for everyone. Especially his friends and relatives. He was funny and smart. We all went out to dinner together at least once a week and we visited at least once a week. Jerry and him would talk daily. They were always checking on each other, helping each other. He sure loved his kitties!â¤ï¸They were his kids. We will miss him very much. He was a big part of both of our lives.💔
I am so sorry for your loss . I worked for Dr. Coates for 15 years. He was a very kind and caring person! Prayers to your family!ðŸ™ðŸ™ðŸ™Cindy Cathey McComb
Phil was a classmate of mine at LSUSD class of ‘83. I was so excited to hear he was planning to attend our upcoming 40th class reunion.
Phil was one of the AK 5, that was out of state students sponsored to LSUSD as AK had no dental school.
I benefited from the same agreement with MS.
Phil was a pleasure. 4 years older than me. He had a wisdom and always had a joke. Great sense of humor. The pride of Stuttgart, AK.
God bless u Phil and u will be missed!!
